Myrtle Beach Labor Day Classic Results

The 2022 Labor Day Classic , Presented by One Hour Heating and Air, began on Saturday, Sept. 3rd at the World Tour Golf Links. We had 70 players arrive at 7:00 am to get the show started. The Greens were fast as usual and tee to green was amazing. Brad and his staff were exceptional as always. The Prize funs that they were playing for was over $5200 that would be paid out in Visa Gift cards. Not too bad for a 70 player field, especially compared to what others pay out!! This does not include the Optional Cash Games.

Div 1 – 11 Players were registered to play but we lost one before play began so 10 players began play at World Tour Golf Links. After completion of round 1, Greg Moore (74) from the Upstate Tour held a 3 shot lead over Mark Ballew and a 5 shot lead over 3 others. Final round on Sunday was at the very difficult TPC of Myrtle Beach. Kevin and his staff also did a great job. The greens were very fast and the pins were in very difficult places. After the smoke cleared, Scott Roberts the reigning 2021 North American Champion had fired a +3 (75) in his final round to edge out 1st round leader Greg Moore by 2 shots. Greg held the lead after the outward 9 but gave it up with a triple on the 11th hole. They arrived at #17, the very difficult par 3 and Greg was ahead by one. Scott made par and Greg made a double and they head to 18 and Scott had a one shot lead. 18 is one of the hardest driving holes in the country and when Greg’s tee shot found the creek running down the right portion of the fairway, it was all but over. Scott made par to capture the crown. With that he pocketed the $460 first place Visa Card, hardware and to make his day even better, he won the only SUPER Skin of the day that was worth $600!! Not too bad I’d say. Greg received $140 for his runner-up finish. Scott ended up taking home $1141 in total monies.

Div 2 – 19 players began round 1. Spencer Cannon firing his best round ever (71), left World Tour with a 1 shot advantage of one of my assistance Joey Todd. Round 2 began at TPC, Spencer and Joey both made the turn after carding a +4 on the Open Side. Things quickly changed when they made the turn to the Championship side. Spencer made double on #10 and all of a sudden was 1 back. This also allowed Max Angell from Virginia Chapter to get with a couple as well.

Walking off #15 Joey and Spencer were all square once again. Joey played the last 3 holes even par to capture the crown. Spencer went for broke on the very difficult par 5, #18 and ended up making triple and slipped to 5th. Max Angell and Victor Rivera played amazing on the Championship side and they respectfully fired a 77 and 78 in final round to finish tied at +11 for tournament. Max won the tie breaker to finish 2nd, Victor took 3rd and Chris Conner held on for 4th. Joey took the $570 Visa gift card for his win, Max received $285, Victor received $170 and Chris received $135. Joey also took first in Senior Division 2 and received a $200 vgc. Joey also won 2 flight Skins, 1 Super Skin and 1 Closes to the Pin for a Grand Total of $1042. Congrats to all.

Div 3 – 17 players competed for crown. It was a battle to the end for sure. After round 1 at World Tour, This division was all bunched up. Jimmy Starrett and Paul Studer held the lead at +9 (81)  with Mark Reid and Brian Jackson only 1 back at (82). Chris Minar was 3 back (84).  Sunday round began and after the opening 9, Jimmy held a 2 shot lead over Chris Minar. Chris played his last 6 holes -1 and was the leader in the clubhouse after posting a very impressive 78 in his final round. Jimmy had no idea but he came off #17 tied for the lead. Chris went out to get ready in case of playoff. Jimmy slipped on his 18th hole to finish 2nd. Chris Huge continued his steady play to capture 3rd with Shawn Powers taking 4th. With the win Chris received a $610 visa gift card along with a $240 vgc for winning Division 3 Seniors as well. Jimmy received $250, Chris Huge received $160.

Div 4 – Division 4 was a battle from the beginning to and it took 38 holes to decide the winner. When they finished round 1 at World Tour, 4 players were within 4 shots of each other. JD Lee (85) held a 1 shot advantage over our new comer Brendan Pickett (86). Cooter Douglas was 2 back at (87) and Tyler Hutchens was 4 back at (89) headed to final round at TPC.  Playing in the same group and starting on the Championship side they stayed close the entire time. When they made the turn to the Open side, Cooter held a 2 shot lead over JD and was 6 ahead of Brendan. Things got real interesting for sure. Cooter slipped a little with Brendan playing his best 9 holes ever!! When they walked off the 14th green, Brendan and Cooter were all square. Cooter made par on 15 with Brendan making bogey and Cooter held a 1 shot lead. Cooter then made birdie on the par 3 16th to stretch the lead to 2.and on 17. Brendan came storming back with a birdie 3 on 17. They came to their 18th hole and I am not sure but think the nerves got both of them. After the dust settled they were all square. Course was busy and they had to find an open hole for them to go to playoff. Brendan grabbed his first win with a par on the second playoff hole. It was a battle for sure. Brendan gets his first win and said he was hooked now. He actually went with me to TPC after Saturday’s round to help me set the tees. He said how much he enjoyed the 2 events he had played in. he said something that made me feel so good and is the reason I do what I do. He said when he drove up and saw all the flags, tents etc he got cold chills and felt like he was is a PGA event.  With the win Brendan received a $405 Visa Gift Card with Cooter taking home a $135 vgc. Tyler took third with JD Lee falling to 4th.

Div 5  14 players were competing for the Title. After Day 1 at World Tour Calvin Beckman and Danny Sullivan were tied at +19 (91) 9 players were within 7 shots of the lead. When the leaders made the turn on Sunday at TPC, Danny had pulled 6 shots clear of Paul Johnson. Danny carded his best 9 of the season with a +4 (40). Things got a little closer on the back but Danny held on to win by 5. Donald Baggett came all the way back to take 2nd. Phillip Johnson Slipped from 2nd to 3rd and Travis Shively equaling the lowest round of the day in Div 5 (92) to round out the top 4.
