Moundsville Golf Tournament Results

Moundsville member and board member Frank Hewitt had pressure to win on his home course. Pin placements were no joke for the competitors, but Frank was able to capitalize on birdies early in his round, and play a safe and consistent round on the back to hold off guest player Todd Antill, to capture his 1st D1 win of the season, after back to back runner up finishes by 4 shots.

Tyler Hughes is a member of the Kentucky tour, playing in Division 2. Tyler made his WV debut last week at Glade Springs. Tyler is back this weekend looking to push through and capture his first win since May, but standing in his way was local player Kyle Voelker. Kyle started off with a birdie and had a birdie on the closing stretch, but scoring showed Tyler in the lead. After the round, Kyle thought he was victorious, but scoring showed him in last. When the scorecard was reviewed and live scoring was updated to match the card, Kyle picked up his first career victory on tour by 3 shots over Tyler.

Kent Taylor has traveled the country far and wide to play in events, while representing the St. Louis chapter. He played our season opener at the Greenbrier earlier this season, but came up just short in the playoff. Kent was looking to redeem himself, but standing in his way was the tight/tough front 9. Two doubles and a triple, left Kent in 4th place, 3 shots off the lead after the front 9. However, a +2 over 36 on the back 9 gave Kent the 2 shot victory in D3 over former D4 stalwart Justin Keaton, who is looking for the same success in D3, as he found in D4.

In a rare off day for D4 points leader Tyler Ellison, the battle would be between Chris Lusk and guest player Casey Orndorff to claim the top spot. Chris, 2nd in points, was looking to gain on Tyler as we head towards the tour championship. Coming to the par 3 18th, Chris needed to par the hole to win outright, while Casey hoped for a bogey and a chance at a playoff. Chris thinned his drive, came up short on his 2nd shot, and left himself a 4 footer behind the hole for bogey. Chris drained the clutch putt, and they were back to number 1. Chris topped his drive, while Casey found the fairway on the opening tee shots. Casey then topped his 2nd shot, while Chris put his on the left side near the green. Casey then reached the green, but his par putt faded off hard left. Chris put his 3rd shot about 5 feet beyond the cup, but seeing Casey’s putt drop off, Chris played his to the right and sank the par putt to take the playoff win.

D5 would have a head to head matchup all weekend, as points leader Jason Hancock would go head to head with Ron Snow. Ron had some issues with his 2nd shots on the day and tough pin locations took Ron out of the running early, as Jason cruised to a 9 shot victory and increasing his D5 points lead. Jason can’t play again until the tour championship, so valuable D5 points will be on the line at Portsmouth September 11th as the field looks to chase Hancock down.

Thanks to everyone who came out the play at Moundsville and to the Moundsville staff/team for hosting us. Also, shout out to mother nature for blessing us with good weather. Moundsville has already been added to the schedule for next season, on Saturday June 17th. Congrats to our champions and we look forward to seeing everyone again next year.

Our next event is Sunday September 11th, at the Donald Ross designed Portsmouth Elks Country Club. Registration deadline is Friday September 9th at 10:24 AM.
