Hampton Cove Golf Course Birmingham Vs Nashville Results

On Saturday, the Birmingham and Nashville chapters of the Amateur Players Tour combined forces to host an event at the “northern gateway to the Trail,” the River Course at Hampton Cove.  Players from four different chapters across Alabama and Tennessee competed for prizes and for the chance to be called champion.  It was a chamber-of-commerce day as sunny, dry conditions greeted the players.  The course was in good condition and, for most, was the first “real tournament golf” round of this young season.

In Division 1, Birmingham chapter member, Derek Nicholson (37-38-75) jumped out to a quick lead that grew to three strokes after his birdie on the par 5 eighth.  Memphis Chapter’s Ed McDugle (40-37-77) made a valiant effort on the back nine to trim the lead to one stroke after an untimely double bogey 5 by Derek on the par 3 16th.  Derek gathered himself and made pars on the remaining holes to win by two strokes.

In Division 2, the battle started early and lasted the entire round.  Five players were in-the-running and it came down to the final green.  Birmingham’s Jordan Jones (36-42-78) made the turn at even par and held a two-stroke lead over Nashville’s Jeremy Craft (38-38-76) and Birmingham’s Terry Szymczyk (38-41-79).  Birmingham’s Corey Gooch (39-38-77) made two late-round birdies on both of the inward nine’s par 3s (#14 & #16) to take a one-stroke lead over Jeremy.  Jeremy kept his hopes alive by making a fantastic par on the 18th after his tee shot found the water which proved to be the shining moment as he was able to emerge victorious.  Corey made par on 17, but was not able to close the deal on 18 as a double-bogey pushed him back in to a second place finish.

In Division 3, it was the George Domit show as he bested the field by seven shots with his one-over round of 73!  Domit (38-35-73) turned at +2 and immediately made birdie on the par 5 10th and then, a chip-in eagle on the par 5 15th to cap off the highlights and claim first place.  Birmingham’s Larry Kirkpatrick (40-40-80) consistent play earned him second place.  Birmingham’s Tyler Slaten (43-42-85), Birmingham’s Robert Christian (45-40-85) and Nashville’s David Sheron (45-40-85) all finished in a tie for 3rd place.

In Division 4, six players finished within three shots of the lead on Saturday, but two players had to compete in a sudden death playoff to decide the winner.  Birmingham’s Kenneth Robbins (40-50-90) got out to a hot start after making the turn at +4.  Nashville’s Thomas Jones (46-44-90) consistency kept him in-the-game and after 18 holes, was all even with Kenneth.  Both players headed back to the course to decide a winner.  Thomas was able to outlast Kenneth for the victory.

In Division 5, the top three finishers were in the same group.  Birmingham’s Jana Hudson (48-45-93) and Nashville’s John Marshall (45-48-93) finished their round tied for the lead.  Earlier in the day, John held a three-stroke advantage at the turn, but Jana did not let that deter her as she was able to grab a one-stroke lead after their 14th hole.  Jana took the one-stroke lead in to the 18th with John on-her-heels.  Jana made double bogey after her tee shot found the water which opened the door for John.  John had a putt for the win, but wasn’t able to convert.  In the playoff, Jana came out victorious after the first hole.  John took second place.

From all of the Chapter owners from the Music City & Birmingham, THANK you for your continued support!
