Callaway Gardens Golf Tournament Results

[read_time]

The Amateur Players Tour – Atlanta was at Callaway Gardens Resort on June 25th and 26th, 2022 and was treated to two wonderful days of golf. Twenty-seven players played across five division for a piece of the over $5000 in prizes.

In Division 1, Chapter co-owner Derek Nicholson continued his stellar play this season and ran away from the field on Saturday.  Sunday, Nicholson was a little shaky, but his Saturday lead was too much for the field to overcome as he was able to take his sixth victory of the year home.

Division 2 was another field with one standout.  James Davis was able to shoot the low round of the tournament on Saturday with an even par 72.  He was able to follow up Saturday’s even par round with an eight over eighty on Sunday to hold on to the lead.  Congratulations to James not only on the tournament victory, his third of the season, but also for his lowest round ever on the APT.  Way to go James.

Division 3 saw the trend continue of Day 1 leaders being able to hold on to their leads and walk away with the victory and the associated prizes.  Jason Sprinkle, visiting from the Virginia Capital, showed up on Saturday and gave himself a seven-stroke lead heading into Sunday’s round thanks to his 81.  He continued the good play on Sunday with an 82, which helped him come away with the victory.  This is of note as it is Jason’s first victory on the APT, awesome job and thanks for visiting the Atlanta Chapter.

Division 4 was no different than the lower Divisions, as the first day leader was able to maintain their lead and continue on for the victory.  Andy Maestas continued to turn in solid round after solid round, which he in turn turned into another victory.  This is Andy’s fourth victory in his inaugural season on the APT.

Division 5 was the only division that provided any fireworks all weekend.  After Saturday’s round it appeared to be a two person race between Eddie Cox and Matthew McMillian, who was making his APT debut, as Eddie was two shots ahead of Matthew which was clear of the field by a few strokes.  They both continued their good play on the front side on Sunday, but both found trouble coming down the stretch on the backside.  And wouldn’t you know the visiting Don Hamblett from the Birmingham chapter followed his shaky first round with a solid 89 on Sunday to post a two day score that Eddie and Matthew knew they needed to beat.  Coming down to the last hole both players had a chance to tie or win, but when Eddie misses his bogie putt Don (who was watching from just behind the green) was assured the victory.

Next up on the Atlanta schedule is BridgeMill Athletic Club set for July 16th. The field is starting to fill up and with a full field we will have over $2,000 in prizes and trophies to hand out
