The Birmingham Chapter of The Amateur Players Tour hosted an event at Cumberland Lakes in Pinson, AL on May 5th, 2024. This event also served as the first event of a five-tournament series for the Patriots Cup. The Patriot’s Cup is a “Fed-Ex Cup” style series with each division points winner receiving $500 Visa Gift Card and trophy. This series is sponsored by Patriot Coatings, who provide concrete coatings for residential and commercial spaces in Alabama. A huge thank you to Cliff Austin and Roger Sheaves for sponsoring this series.

In Division 1, Derek Nicholson used five birdies and an eagle to post a score of 70 (-2). Lamar Adams, in the pairing behind, stepped on the final hole needing a birdie to tie. Lamar gave himself a chance on the short par 4 finishing hole. With Lamar’s birdie sliding by the hole, Derek secured the victory and was awarded the trophy and $180 in prizes. Derek was also victorious in the Open Net contest which resulted in $120 in prizes.

Robert Graham, the Division 2 champion, was able to make four birdies on the day to help counter the bogies to post a score of 74 (+2). Robert carried the lead for most of the round, but Andree Tucker gave himself a chance with four holes remaining. A late double bogey squashed the comeback attempt and allowed Robert to pull away. Robert was awarded the trophy and $230 in prizes.

Roger Sheaves made the turn on the day at one under par and carried a hefty lead into the back nine. After major back nine struggles from Roger, the door was opened for Greg Mason and Logan Cowan to battle back into it. Roger posted a total score of 85 (+13) and Greg and Logan both needed a birdie on the final hole to force a playoff. Both players made par and Roger was able to hold on to the victory. Roger was awarded the trophy and $190 in total prizes.

Division 4 was another close battle between Nicholas Gaston and Danny Daniel. The champion would be decided on the final three holes. After a double bogey on the 16th hole by Danny the door was opened for Nicholas to secure his first victory on the Amateur Players Tour. Nicholas was awarded the trophy and the $190 in total prizes. Congrats Nicholas on your first victory.

Jeff Noel, the Division 5 champion, is continuing to improve on and already stellar 2024 season. Jeff posted a 91 (+19) to take the victory and the $210 prize pool. This is the third victory of the season for Jeff and has propelled him to the points lead for player of the year in Division 5. Congrats Jeff and keep up the great play.

Next up for Birmingham is Highland Park on June 9th, Registration is open and this will serve as the second event in the Patriots Cup Series.
