Whittier Workday Challenge Golf Results

The APT Southern California Chapter hosted the Whittier Workday Challenge on Friday at California Country Club in Whittier. The private club was welcoming, and the players enjoyed this new long and challenging venue.

The round of the day went to Chris Hanson in Division 2, posting a three birdie and three bogey even par 72 for his second straight victory, this time running away by 5 over Matt Fegley (Northern California Chapter). Chris played the front 9 in a clean-card 35 with Matt just two behind, but on the challenging back Chris’s two birdies vs just three bogeys was easily good enough to claim the Workday Trophy and a $125 Visa Gift Card, plus Chris also picked up $170 in the skins game to add to his haul! Denis Watson joined Chris and Matt as the only players to break 80 at CCC, with his 78 good for a win in Division 1. His towering hybrid from 215 to reach #16 in two may have been the shot of the day!

Brandan Marshall also made it two for August, putting up an 85- while he didn’t think it would be good enough to win when he came in, Justin Smith with an 87 (Rocky Mountain Chapter) was the only other player in Division 3 to break 90 on the long CCC track with punishing rough. Brandan takes home the Workday Trophy and a $125 Visa Gift Card, while extending his points lead going into the final events of the 2021 season. Both Division 2&3 played the APT Orange tees at 6600 yards, and Division 1 played the CCC Blue tees at 6800 yards.

Eighteen holes wasn’t enough in Division 4 to crown a champion. Ron Rubin and Steven Ayala both carded 88’s, with Kurt Odegard finishing just one shot out of the playoff. The two headed back to the par 5 #1 (with a large from the afternoon event crowd watching!) to settle the match. One eventful hole was all that was needed as Ron calculated his birdie chip correctly and dropped it for a 4! He earned the trophy and a $150 Visa Gift Card for the playoff win. Steven continues to knock on the door and heads to the APT Players Championship national major at Troon next weekend with a lot of momentum.

The field was short in Division 5 but the results were close. Dennis McZeal and Joe Lindsay battled all day and just one stroke separated them in the end. Both posted excellent scores of 95 and 96, respectively, on the unforgiving CCC layout. Dennis also heads to Phoenix with momentum as he looks to improve his Division 5 national points standing. Division 4&5 played the APT Green tees at 6350 yards, with Seniors 60+ on the APT Gold tees at 5950 yards.
