[read_time]

Originally slated to be the Amateur Players Tour – Charlotte Chapter season opener, Verdict Ridge had to be rescheduled due to severe weather. The new date turned out to be an absolutely beautiful day. The greens running true and the course running fast, the limited field event at Verdict Ridge would not yield many low scores.

Division 1, with a baker’s dozen in the field, Verdict Ridge tested the players' will and patience from the first hole. Kyle Moffet (38-39-77) played solidly all day but would finish just outside the money line. Scott Patnode (35-41-76) got off to a hot start making the turn at one under par for the early lead. The back nine would prove to be Scott’s challenge. He was able to hang on to finish third. Daniel Jackson (37-38-75) and Morgan Anderson (36-39-75) would battle it out on the back nine to determine a winner. Morgan seemed to be out of contention with a ton of bogies to start the back nine. Daniel played solid golf most of the back nine. Back-to-back birdies on 16 and 17 by Morgan provided him a chance. Daniel had a birdie, double bogey finish to send them to a playoff.

Morgan and Daniel would head to the course to play an additional four holes to determine our champion. In the end Morgan earns his first victory of the year. Congratulations to both players.

Division 2 saw some separation from the contenders early in the tournament. Guest, Alfredo Scaroina (41-42-83) got a taste of competitive golf in his first event, having to go to a scorecard playoff with Rich Pizio (41-42-83). Rich would win the playoff to take third place. Johnny Moffett (41-38-79), a grizzled veteran on tour, was able to find something in his swing on the back nine to put himself in contention. In the end, Johnny would have to settle for second. Wesley Jones (37-39-76) brought his ‘A’ game to Verdict Ridge as he cruised around the course to earn the victory.

Division 3 was a contest for second to fourth this day. Cliff Morgan (46-40-86) was able to steady his game on the back nine to take fourth. Kevin Stines (41-44-85) having played a solid front nine was able to hang-on to take third. With home course knowledge, Justin Desantis (45-39-84) was able to manage his game well enough to secure second place. Nolan Elenz (40-39-79) would secure the win by 5 shots. Nolan was able to stay away from the big numbers today and dust the field with his steady play.

Division 4 usually sees a lot of movement on the leaderboard over the course of the day. I say usually, except for this day, as the leader board stayed steady most of the day. Sindo Mayor (40-45-85) played a steady front nine but had to hang on to finish third. Jimmy Sullivan played consistent all day and tried to hang with our eventual winner but would have to settle for second. The day belonged to Eric Seibert (39-41-80). With a fist pumping in the air and a smile from ear to ear as he arrived at the scoring table, there was little doubt who won. I have a feeling we are going to be seeing a little more of Eric in the coming weeks.

Division 5 was a three-way contest all day with a shot separating our players from the start. There is a saying, “just win, baby” and that is what Derek Kemp did. Derek was able to win by two for his first victory of the year.
