Tunica National Golf Course Tournament Results

[read_time]

Tunica National once again welcomed the Memphis/Mid-South APT for our regional two-day event.  The course was in excellent shape and Mother Nature did her thing with gusting winds both days.  For the first time in several years we avoided rain, except for those few groups that got the 5 minute downpour late Sunday.  Otherwise it was an awesome weekend highlighted by some stellar golf.

In Division 1 Jordan Roper came out firing on day one posted a +2 (74).  Roper was battling David Apperson and Brandon Gurley’s matching +4s (76).  Day two is when the fireworks started!  East Tennessee Chapter member Tim Saunders came out like a man on a mission on the front nine. After opening Saturday with a +9 (81), Saunders dropped three birdies in his first 5 holes and a front nine -3 (33) to run his name up the leaderboard in a hurry.  Roper had a rough day as he struggled down the stretch to a +9 (81) and a 7th place finish.  The day was only getting started though as Brandon Gurley shoots an even par 36 on the front nine to pull within striking distance of Roper and Saunders.  Saunders continue his hot streak on the back 9 shooting a -2 (34) en route to his tournament best round of -5 (67) and two day total of +4 (148) and a second place finish.  The day belonged to Gurley though.  After starting even on his front 9, he found three more birdies on the back to come in at a -3 (33) and a final score for the day of -3 (69).  Gurley’s 69 on Sunday was enough to propel him to a two day total of +1 (143) and his first win of the season.

Division 2 saw a newcomer to the Memphis/Mid-South APT bring home a win in his first event.  After a first round 77 (+5), Derek Joslin followed that up with a second day 74 (+2) to finish the event at +7 (151).  Joslin’s 151 edged out Jeff Avant and Paul Luker’s matching  152s.

Division 3 saw some more drama over the weekend.  Six players finished the weekend within 4 shots of the win in the largest division of the event (26 players).  Nashville member Marcel Sow came away with the win firing a +7 (79) on the final day (+20, 164 for the event) to edge out Keith Nuckolls by one shot (+21, 165 for the event), Brandon Permenter and Jon Sylvester by 3 shots (+23, 167), and the combo of Travis Gullick and Paul McGee (+24, 168 for the event).

Division 4 saw our only playoff of the day as Birmingham’s Mark Rigby and Memphis’ Anthony Myers had to go back out to #1 tee and battle it out.  Myers started and finished the event very consistently with a day one 83 and a day two 84 for a two day total of 167 (+23).  Rigby shot 87 on Saturday but ran up the leaderboard to force a playoff on Sunday with his second day +8, 80.  Myers prevailed in the playoff for the win with a solid drive and a great iron shot to within 20 feet.  Rigby left his second shot right of the green then hit his chip shot too hard and went over the other side.  The crowd of about 15 players following the playff groaned at the misfortune of Rigby’s shot.

Division 5 saw a repeat winner with Denver Dulaney using a stellar second round +8, 80 to seal off his 8 shot victory over Sean Jacobs.  Jacobs fired rounds of 89-85 for a two day total of 174, but it wasn’t quite enough to catch Dulaney’s rounds of 86-80 for a two day total of 166 and his second win of the season!

Congrats to all of our winners and we look forward to seeing everyone at Mirimichi May 21-22!
