The WV Memorial Golf Tournament Results

APT-WV took to the Arnold Palmer Signature Designed golf course at Stonewall Resort, where they have had 8 straight days of rain. The rough would make the US Open rough look like a fairway, and this led to a tough test for golfers, as good shots were rewarded with clean lies, while bad shots were punished severely.

Collegiate golfer Gregory Gouvin made his APT debut, going head to head with D1 stalwart Jerod Ewing at Stonewall Resort. Jerod birdied the 1st hole, then struggled, finishing the front 9 at +6. Gregory played with Jerod, and took a birdie on the 6th hole, to also finish the front 9 at +6. However, 3 doubles on the back 9 was enough to derail Gregory in his quest for the purple vase, as Jerod played mostly par golf on the back to take the win by 5 shots. Best of luck to Gregory for his upcoming sophomore season and we hope to see you on the APT as a full member one day soon.

In another head to head battle, Corey Justice made just his 3rd career start for the APT, having a victory and a 3rd to his resume thus far. He went up against Brandon Preece, who this season has a victory and runner up finish on his stat line, as he looked for his 2nd straight victory in tournaments he’s played in. Brandon struggled with a +11 on the front, but was able to make 2 birdies on the back, including the par 5 18th. Corey though finished the front at +4, and coasted down the back to hang on to a 4 shot victory, and his 2nd career win.

Tink Brown has been playing some strong golf lately, and came to Stonewall looking to continue his strong play. Another golfer who has been playing some good golf lately is APT-Charlotte member Tony Koechli. Tony has 2 wins on the 2022 campaign, and his consistent play on the front 9, was able to build a lead that Tink wasn’t able to overcome. A close battle down the stretch, thanks to a birdie on 15 by Tink, was ended on the 17th with a costly double, as Tony took his 3rd win of the season.

The players at the top of the D4 points standings took to the course to jockey for position as we head toward the tour championship at Cobb. Points leader Tyler Ellison cannot make the tour championship, so he’s trying to play as many events as possible all over the country to establish a points lead, that others won’t be able to catch. His closest competitor as of this event is Chris Lusk, who has always been making the rounds on other tours to grab some points. It was a 2 man show between this two most of the day, but an opening eagle on the very 1st hole set the tone, as Tyler would defeat Chris by 7 shots.

Jason Hancock joined the tour in June, and has climbed to top of the D5 standings. He was looking to extend that lead, but playing as a guest today, Jason Gibson was looking to establish himself as a D5 player once he officially joins the tour. It was mostly between these two, but a birdie on 10, and pars on 14 and 15 were enough to give Jason Gibson his first career win and defeat D5 points leader Jason Hancock by 3 shots.

Thanks to everyone who played, and to Mike and his team at Stonewall Resort for hosting us. We return August 20/21 for our 2-day tournament at Glade Springs Resort on the Stonehaven and Woodhaven golf courses. Two top 10 ranked golf courses in WV will test our golfers and the double points on the line should make point races interesting as we near the end of the season.  `
