The Brawl at Bear’s Best Atlanta Results

[read_time]

We want to thank all the players who made the trek down to Atlanta to play one of Jack Nicklaus’ signature courses!  What makes Bear’s Best Atlanta different than any other Jack design, is that this course is a culmination of Jack’s favorite designed holes from all over the world!  There is not one hole that is the same, and with fast and undulating greens, Bear’s Best Atlanta was a perfect venue to host the Southern Brawl.  The weather was perfect on Saturday but unfortunately was cut short to an 18 hole contest due to cold and rainy weather on Sunday.  Even though the tournament was cut short, we kept the prize pool at $60 per player and double points!  Congrats to our winners!

Division 1

Congrats to Tony Wise (Georgetown, KY) for shooting a 1 over par 73 and winning by 2 shots!  Even playing the course at over 6800 yds and starting with a bogey 5 on the first hole, Tony was able to quickly rebound making a birdie on No2.  After steadying the ship he was able to play the last 16 holes in 1 over par.  Great round Tony!

And congrats to Derek Nicholson (Birmingham, AL) and Matt Barnes (Hoover, AL) for tying for 2nd place at +3 over par!  Derek had a great start with a birdie on No1 but struggled on the backside.  And Matt played “steady Eddy” with 1 over on the front and 2 over on the back nine.

Division 2

“Age is just a number” as Johnny Pierce (Chattanooga, TN) would say after turning 60 this year and using the Senior Tee option.  Johnny ended up winning Division 2 in a scorecard playoff after being tied at +5 77!  Johnny needed all 3 birdies during his round to stay within reach of Terry Szymczyk (Owens Cross Roads, AL).  Terry was playing in front of Johnny all day and setting the pace for who can finish the strongest!  Unfortunately Terry finished the back nine at +3 and lost the scorecard playoff by 1 shot.  Congrats on a great round Terry and Johnny!  And congrats to Jerry Burrell (Cleveland, TN) for finishing in solo 3rd place.  Jerry started off strong with 3 birdies on the front nine but couldn’t hold on towards the end.

Division 3

Congrats to Randy Redden (Chickamauga, GA) for shooting 85, and winning by 1 shot!  Even though Randy could not stay in Division 2, we think he’s found a home in Division 3!  Randy had 1 birdie on the front nine and kept his mistakes to a minimum on the back.  Great job Randy!  And congrats to Shane Parrott (Prattville, AL), Tony Koechli (Lyman, SC), Bryson Peyton (Cleveland, TN), and Cliff Austin (Lenexa, KS) for all finishing in a tie for 2nd place!  We had 5 players within 1 shot of the win!  To make it fair for all players, we chopped the pot and points and gave each player the same prize money and points for tying for 2nd place.  Great playing to all!

Division 4

Congratulations to Robby Hamilton (Rossville, GA) for righting the ship after a rocky front nine, was able to get it turned around, shot and 84 and won by 5 shots!  And congrats to Jason Anderson (Ringgold, GA), Ron Mollenkopf (Lexington, KY), and Thomas Jones II (Dickson, TN) for finishing all tied for 2nd place shooting an 89.  All 2nd and 3rd place prize money and points was chopped, and spilt evenly between the 3 players.

Division 5

And finally, congrats to Danny Sullivan (Simpsonville, SC) for getting his first APT win!  Danny was able to stay consistent all day shooting 46-47 and winning by 1 shot!  There was only a 3 shot difference between the top 3 players!  Congrats to Chip Kirkland (Crossville, TN) for coming in 2nd place.  Chip was looking to take the win after birdieing the 17th hole, but double bogeyed the 18th hole and lost by 1 shot.  And congrats to Thurman Boyd (Smyrna, TN) for coming in 3rd place.  Thurman was also very consistent during his round shooting 48-48 and finishing just 2 shots out of the lead.
