Eastern Icebreaker @ Sequoyah National Recap

The challenge of this course was on full display as the competitors from 17 local chapters from around the country played in the inaugural event at Sequoyah National in western North Carolina.  On behalf of all the Chapter Owners involved with the event, I would like to express our gratitude to you, the players, for coming to this event and making it special.  As we drove around the course, we could see the challenges that you faced.  Some faired well, some, not so well and that was to be expected over the challenges that this course provided.

In all, 98 competitors teed it up due to a couple of last-minute cancellations.  Even with those cancellations we were happy to provide a full payout of $6000 in our normal Divisional contest and another $750 in our Senior Net Game contest.

Division 1

Kyle Moffett (Carolina Triad), Matt Epperson (Kentucky) and Greg Moore were all tied at Even Par starting day 2.  Greg got off to a slow start and it seemed as if we were heading for a sudden death playoff scenario as Kyle and Matt were both at +2 with two holes to play.  However, a couple of mistakes by Kyle and a closing birdie by Matt resulted in a 5-stroke victory in the end.  Matt (72-73-145) receives a $480 APT Visa Gift Card for the win along with the Trophy.  Greg Moore (72-78-150) wins the scorecard playoff with the better back nine total and collected the second-place APT gift card valued at $270.  Kyle (72-78-150) for his efforts collected the $150 APT Visa Gift Card.

Division 2

APT Chapter Owner, Anthony Stout (Southwest Virginia) that Claims 1st place with round of 82 & 79 for a two-day total of 159.  Anthony came from off the pace as day 1 leaders had some struggles backing up their play from day 1.  Anthony Collect the first-place prize of an APT Gift Card loaded with $500.  Johnny Moffett (Charlotte) (79-83-162) collects the second place APT Gift card valued at $400. Third place goes to overnight leader AJ Ayala (Atlanta Chapter Owner) (78-84-162) and the $300 APT Gift Card.  AJ lost on the scorecard playoff with a higher second day total. Fourth goes to John Perron (Birmingham) (86-77-163) and collects the $200 APT Gift Card.  Rounding out the top five paying positions was Chris Harris (Kentucky) with a two-day total of (83-81-164).  Chris receives a $100 APT Gift Card for his efforts.

Division 3

This was another tough fought contest that was close all the way until the final few holes.  Glen Bartley (Charlotte) (87-80-167) wins by 4 shots with a solid round to close out the tournament wins a $500 APT Gift Card).  Todd Gibbs (Kentucky) (87-84-171) takes second and the $380 APT Gift Card.  AJ Lee (Hilton Head) (90-82-172) takes home third place and the $280 APT Gift Card.  Gary Barrow (Kentucky) (90-83-173) takes home fourth place honors and the $180 APT Gift Card.  Rounding out the top 5 paying positions was Randy Redden Jr. (Smoky Mountain) (87-87-174) and takes home the $100 APT Gift Card.

Division 4

Overnight leader Clay Euton (Kentucky) (83-93-176) saw his overnight lead disappear due to some strong play by his chasing rivals.  In the end, he was able to pull it together and hold on for a well-deserved 2 stroke victory over some tough conditions. Clay takes home the first-place trophy along with a $480 APT Visa Gift Card.  Danny Stein (Charlotte) (94-84-178) who had a good night at the tables at Harrah’s Cherokee on Saturday night said he did not care how he shot on Sunday as he was already ahead.  With the pressure off, his round of 84 was best in the division on day 2, but not good enough to chase down Clay.  For his efforts, Danny receives the second place Gift Card worth $310.  Paul Harris (Smoky Mountain) (88-90-178) takes home third place after losing the scorecard playoff with Stein.  Paul wins a $220 APT Visa gift card for third place.  Rounding out the top 4 was Jason Anderson (Smoky Mountain) (92-90,182) who beat out Derek Marley (Carolina Triad) due to a better second day score.  Jason takes home a $130 APT Visa Gift Card.

Division 5

36 Holes and 191 strokes was just not enough for our division 5 leaders.  Justin Keaton (West Virginia Chapter Owner) (100-91) and overnight leader Rob Luffman (Southwest Virginia) (86-105).  We sent them back to hole 18 to decide who would be our winner.  It did not take long, and Justin takes the playoff after just one hole and claims the $480 APT Visa Gift Card and the Trophy for his efforts.  Rob settles for second and the $290 APT Visa Gift Card.  Nadine Laroche (Columbus) (95-101-196) claims third place and an APT Visa Gift card worth $180.  Rounding out the top 4 was Brett St. Clair (Southwest Virginia) (98-100-198) who claimed the $100 APT Visa Gift Card for his efforts.
