Oglebay Resort Golf Tournament Results

he Wheeling weekend got off to a flooded start on Friday, as the Marsh Wheeling Memorial Tournament at Wheeling Country Club had to be postponed, when the 18th green came under water and the course was unplayable. Relentless rain Thursday night and all day Friday, also put the Oglebay Open Championship into question, with rain again Saturday. However, Danny and his team at Oglebay had the course in great shape and the rain did not dampen the spirits of the golfers who took the course this weekend.

Before the rain started, Jared Taylor made the trip to Wheeling a few days early to get a few practice rounds in. The early work paid off as Jared jumped out to a 4 shot lead over Frank Hewitt, after day one on the Jones course, with a 2 under par 69 in the rain and wind on Saturday. Jared played smooth and steady on Sunday at the Palmer course, and extended his victory to 7 shots over Frank. Jerod Ewing played even with Jared Taylor on day 2, but a difficult opening round, knocked Jerod out of contention.

Lindy Sullivan enjoyed a fairly routine day to open the Oglebay Open Championship. One birdie and some good par saves helped him take a 12 shot lead into day 2 over Brandon Thompson. Lindy and Brandon went head to head on Sunday, where Lindy increased his lead to win by 19 shots over Brandon, in perfect golf conditions on the final day of the tournament.

An all Ohio division 3 took place against each other to see who would come out on top. Columbus Tour player Michael Bruesch shot a tremendous 5 over par in round 1, with 1 birdie on the round. Jason Vanderpool tried to give Michael a run on day 2 to make the comeback, but was Michael was too strong on the weekend and extended his lead by another 4 shots to claim the championship.

Tiger vs Phil, Jack vs Arnold, Hagen vs Jones, Faldo vs Norman, Graham vs Heitz…these are some of the great rivalries in the history of golf. While the previous 4 pairs have battled in a bygone era, Graham vs Heitz gets to take place before our eyes on a near weekly basis. Sean took round 1 at The Greenbrier, Michael took round 2 at Bel Meadow, and round 3 was rained out. The war to settle the score would take place at Oglebay Resort where Michael would take the a 3 shot lead into the final round over Sean. A 2 man battle all weekend, 3rd place finishing Justin Keaton was never in contention against the leaders. Sean shot +2 on the back 9, while Michael faltered on the TOUGH par 4 12th hole, followed by a triple on the short downhill par 3 13th. This was enough to give Sean his 2nd win of the season and bragging rights until the next event.

Kevin Long won Division 5 unopposed after Ron Snow had to WD from the tournament. Kevin played consistent both days and was crushing drives off the tee in the final round. Kevin could play his way up to Division 4 before seasons end to compete with Graham, Heitz, Keaton, McGee, etc for D4 championships.

Next event is Sunday May 22nd at Pipestem Resort. A Member/Guest net scramble will take place at Pipestem on Saturday May 21st as sort of a practice round to prepare for Sunday.

Thanks to everyone who came out to play and congratulations to our champions!

Special thanks to Oglebay Resort for hosting us and helping us through the rain Saturday.
