Los Angeles Public Links at Brookside Results

An eager field lined up on a perfect summer day in Pasadena, CA at Brookside Golf Club Course #2 for the APT Los Angeles Public Links. Sometimes overlooked because of the short yardage on the scorecard, the E.O. Nay course held its own- but several players put up great scores to claim victories and podium spots in their respective divisions! All play was from the Brookside blue tees, except 60+ seniors from the white tees.

The number required in Division 1 to win continues to be in red figures, as Denis Watson put up a stellar 69 which included 5 birdies to claim victory by 6 over David Chun. “It was a bit of an up and down round, but I made 5 birdies and could have had more- I hit the stick on 17 and missed the birdie putt!” Denis said after his round. He took home the Jackie Robinson Memorial custom glass trophy and a $175 Visa Gift Card.

Eight players lined up in Division 2 including some new entrants- but in the end it was two Tour veterans battling for the title. Mark Lytle and Scott Christensen both made the long drive up from San Diego worthwhile as they went back and forth. Mark’s even par 35 on the front 9 gave him a 4 shot cushion over the trio of Scott, Nick Mendiola, and Mitchell Harrison. Mark was still just two over par on the 17th tee, however two closing doubles did not hurt his position just the final score, as he was able to hold on by one despite Scott’s closing birdie. He claimed the trophy and a $200 Visa Gift Card (and helped Phil close up shop after- thanks again Mark!) Scott cashed a $50 Visa Gift Card for 2nd with 77.

High drama in Division 3 as a THREE man playoff was required to determine a winner. Martin Dimas made the trip over representing the Phoenix chapter and posted 84 first, coming home in an excellent 38. Daniel Robles and Justin Chandraputra were still on course with the leaderboard indicating the clubhouse lead. It did not look like extra holes would be necessary on the 18th tee as Justin (+12/17) had a two shot lead over Daniel (+14/17)- however a closing 6 for Justin to Daniel’s 4 meant all three signed for matching 84’s. The golf course snuck our threesome out and Justin only needed two holes to eliminate the other two to claim his first title! Martin dropped out after a bogey on 1, before Justin’s par on 2 sealed the win. He earned a $200 Visa Gift Card and the trophy while Daniel took home a $50 Visa Gift Card for his second place finish.

Milton Gray has been on the doorstep of victory in Division 4 a few times this year but had not claimed a trophy- before Saturday. He defeated Marty Rhinehart by two with a  very solid 87 to wrap his hands around the trophy and a $100 Visa Gift Card. “I’ve waited for this for a long time, I’ve already sent the photos to 10 people!” he said after his victory. Congrats, Milton!

Division 5 also had some new entrants but it was the local who claimed the title- Fred Eggins extended his points race lead with a personal best 84 to win by 1 over Mike Pavese. A member at Brookside, he used his local knowledge of the tricky greens on #2 and a 3-3-3-3 stretch (WOW!) on holes 12-15 en route to the victory. Fred heads into the last month of qualifying for the North American Championships with a full head of steam, the trophy, and a $150 Visa Gift Card to boot.

All results are posted and in the below table below. If you have not received your skins money yet, it will be available for you in an envelope at your next event.

Thank you all for coming out to play on Saturday! We have a very exciting July schedule in California lined up. Look for an email with details on the events early this week!
