General’s Retreat at Hermitage Results
The Nashville Amateur Players Tour returned to The Hermitage for the second time in five weeks to compete on the General’s Retreat course which was home to the LPGA’s Sara Lee Classic from 1988 to 1999. Once again, weather played a huge factor in the outcomes of three of our divisions.
In Division 1, Smoky Mountain chapter’s Tim Saunders fired the lowest round of the day with a four under round of 68 and won by four shots over Memphis chapter member, Ed McDugle. Tim and Ed battled to a stalemate after 10 holes, but Tim reeled-off three straight birdies to take the lead and never looked back.
In Division 2, our largest competition of the day, John Bradshaw was able to capture victory with a three over round of 75. Tim Ehret held the lead late into his round, but a late-round triple bogey on the par five 16th derailed his chances. Tim was able to post five-over 77 and secure second place. A host of five other golfers finished tied for third place with rounds of 6-over 78. USGA tie-breakers are used to determine who gets the 3rd and 4th place gift cards. Mike Wilkins, from the Smoky Mountain chapter, who did not get off to the greatest of starts on the front nine, shot two-under on his way into the clubhouse for the scorecard playoff victory for third place. Cary Anderson’s inward nine of 39 allowed him to secure the fourth place gift card.
In Division 3, the rain-shortened tournament was limited to 13 holes. Kevin Smith scored the three-stroke victory over Mike Penn, who took home second place.
In Division 4, the tournament was shortened to 15 holes. Nashville Chapter owner, Joe Smolira, was able to take home 1st place with a three-stroke victory over Larry Sumner.
In Division 5, Thurman Boyd, fresh off his rain-shortened major victory at The Shoals, made it two-in-a-row to win by four strokes over Birmingham chapter’s Tim Harbin and Nashville points leader, David McDow. Tim bested David in the scorecard playoff to take the second-place gift card.
