Fincastle Country Club Golf Tournament Results

On top of a mountain, just outside of Bluefield, West Virginia, sits Fincastle Country Club in the town of Bluefield, Virginia. The course brags about their fast greens, and they lived up to their reputation on Sunday. If you’re above the hole, just anticipate a 3 putt in your near future. A side game we missed out on today was over/under on total putts. Anything below 40 was an accomplishment!

D1- Jerod Ewing won unopposed. He shot a +5 with 2 birdies.

D2- Brad Whitehead won unopposed. He shot +19 with 1 birdie.

D3- Matt Robinson made a note to keep track of his total putts on the day, after seeing how fast the greens were on the first 2 holes. On hole 4, a downhill par 3, there sat one lonely tree, which Matt proceeded to hit behind. Matt then took his wedge and drained the chip for a birdie. Later on hole 13, Matt remembered how much easier it is to just chip it in, rather than putt it, as he drained an eagle wedge shot on a 1 hop and drop, which propelled him past Dave Shepperd and Matt Peretti for the lead. Dave and Matt P were at the top for most of the day, but in the end, Dave came home 3rd, 3 shots behind Matt who held off Matt Peretti making his tour debut on his home course by 2 strokes. This is Matt’s 2nd win of the season.

D4- The most dedicated player on tour award has to go to Tyler Ellison, who left New Jersey at 3 AM to make the drive to Bluefield to play golf today. Tyler fought near the top all day with defending D4 champion from Pipestem Chris Lusk. Justin Keaton was near the top most of the day as well, as the 3 changed the lead or were tied for the lead at various points throughout the back 9. Chris however fell off the pace after back to back triples on hole 15 and 16, and a double on 17. Tyler continued to fight and was 1 shot off the lead going to 18 needing a birdie to force a playoff. He ended up taking a triple, giving Justin Keaton his 1st win of the season by 4 strokes.

D5- In the best contest of the day, RJ Smith, Jason Massie, and Jason Hancock battled it out for supremacy, looking for their first career victories on the APT. The most consistent player in D5 over the past season and a half, Kevin Long, was recently promoted to D4, leaving shoes to fill to claim the top spot in D5. Jason Massie and RJ Smith swapped the lead a few different times on the front 9, making it look like a 2 man race. Jason Hancock however would not be denied a place at the table, as he drained a long putt for eagle on number 11, and once again finding the bottom of the cup for eagle on the par 4 13th. This propelled Jason Hancock to the top, but 3 straight triples to end his round, knocked him to a 3rd place finish. Jason Massie was left to battle RJ for the top spot, but Jason went double, triple, a bogey, and a triple to fall off the pace, coming home 2nd, 7 shots off the pace to our D5 champion, RJ Smith. RJ finished strong, going +3 on the final 4 holes, which proved to be the difference for his 1st career win.

Congratulations to all of our winners and thanks to everyone who came out to play today. Thank you to our sponsor, Groovy 94.1 and Southern Communications for their support. We look forward to seeing everyone at our next event, June 12th at Canaan Valley Resort. Registration deadline is Friday June 10th
