Cherokee National Golf Club Results

Cherokee National Golf Club played host for the Amateur Players Tour-
Upstate Chapter on Saturday June 12th.

We had a little of everything at this event. Redemption, shock, playoff, rain delays and laughs.

Division 5 is our shock of the day. Bob Russell (45-50-95) would never look at the leaderboard all day. When Bob turned in his scorecard, he didn’t believe he played well enough to win. We had to inform Bob three times he won by seven and show him the leader board before he believed we didn’t play a bad joke on him.

Division 4 saw three players separate themselves from the field. needed extra holes to crown our champion. Steve Daniels (41-43-84) minimized his dropped shots on the front nine to stay in contention all day. Ultimately, Steve found himself having to settle for third. Dean Barron (40-43-83) put himself in contention again this week and tied Brian Gregor (42-41-83) who has been knocking on the door all year. Both players headed back to the course to settle the tie. Dean and Brian tied the first hole and headed to the second playoff hole. Believing the nerves of a playoff would settle, Brian managed his adrenaline well enough to par the par 3 second for the win.

Division 3 saw a tight leaderboard all day with four players seeking a win. Kirk Tatge (45-40-85) made a run on the back nine but would finish T3 and two shots out of the money. Matt Miller (43-42-85), tried to keep his excellent play going, coming back from the Victoria National Match Play and crushing APT founder Matt Minder in his opening match, also settled for a T3 finish. TJ Eaves (39-44-83), played well on his opening nine to put himself in contention. The back nine would prove to be a challenge, although TJ managed to stay away from the big numbers. Ultimately TJ would settle for second. Joe Rollison (38-44-82), playing out of the Carolina-Triad Chapter, navigated the front nine one shot better than the field. With the back nine playing difficult for everyone, Joe also managed to stay away from the big numbers to secure the win!

Division 2 was a typical tight leaderboard after the outward nine. Wesley Jones (39-40-79) put himself in contention again. Wesley was challenged on the back nine and had to settle for third. Bobby Ream (38-40-78) set the pace with seven pars while dropping only two shots on the front nine. The back nine, again proved to be playing more difficult for the players, Bobby finished with a birdie and took second. Joe Tucker(40-35-75) decided to flip the script of the day. Joe found the front nine more of a challenge but kept the leaders in his sights. The rain delay must have provided Joe an opportunity to find the key to his game as he lit up the inward nine. Going 3 under in his last four holes, Joe shoots 35 on the back nine to win by 3 shots.

Division 1 - Following the theme of the day, saw players taking advantage of the scorable front nine. The difference was how the players also managed the back nine. While still challenging, players changed gears and managed the back nine better than other flights. Dennis Reames (33-44-77), Daniel Jackson (33-40-73) and Scott Roberts (34-41-75) all set the pace on the front nine. Patrick O’Brien (39-36-75) found himself changing gears after his opening nine. Patrick takes third on the scorecard playoff with a clutch birdie on 18. Daniel Jackson would need to birdie 18 to force a playoff.
Daniel would come up short of the goal and take second place. Scott Goodelle (35-37-72) got his redemption from the previous event. Scott used a wrong tee box at Morrisville and incurred a stroke penalty, needless to say Scott was not pleased. After bogies on 10, 13 and 15, Scott saw his chances slipping away. Scott was able to birdie 16 and 17 to erase a three-shot deficit to capture the win.

Thank you to all our members and guests, representing five different APT Chapters, for joining us at Cherokee National Golf Club!

Thank you to Cherokee National Golf Club and their staff for helping us make this event a success while showcasing the course.
