Cabarrus Golf Tournament Results

[read_time]

On Saturday August 7th, the Amateur Players Tour – Charlotte played a player favorite, Cabarrus Country Club in Cabarrus North Carolina.

With extensive maintenance programs being completed over the past few years, the course is in its usual great condition. The APT-Charlotte Chapter is still #absolutely excited about having the opportunity to play one of the area's best private courses.

Division 5  saw Grant Childress (43-51-94) with the lead after nine holes with Keith Gibson (46-44-90) and Richard Pirz (46-49-95) nipping at his heels. Richard would fall off the pace on his second nine. Kieth played a game of slow and steady. Keeping the ball in front of him and while avoiding two bad holes in a row. Keith would take the lead and never look back. But don’t shake Keith's hand on his victory, it may aggravate his broken finger. Sindo Mayor (44-38-82) was the man to catch on this day. He would stumble on 6,7 and 8, Sindo was able to make a small adjustment to capture the win.

Division 4 had four players jockey for lead most of the day. Rondal Gibson (43-42-85) would find himself in a scorecard playoff with Le Kang (45-40-85) for third. Le would win the scorecard playoff and third place money. Tyler Sexton (40-44-84) takes second as his charge late in the round would come up short.

Division 3 had five players within a shot of the leaders at 82. Steven Hawk (39-44-83), Matt Foreman (40-43-83), and Vic Lawrence (41-42-83) would come up short on the scorecard playoff and finish just outside the money. Kirk Tatge (43-40-83) takes fourth on his solid back nine play. Doug Stowers (44-39-83) takes third again on his back nine play. It would require extra holes to crown our D3 champion. John Torres (43-39-82) and Brad Haymore (42-40-82) headed back to 18 to contest first place. It would only take one hole to settle the tie. John Torres would be forced to lay-up and settle for a solid par. Brad was in position to go for the green in two and would two putt to capture his first win on the APT.

Division 2 required players to shoot in the 70’s to cash at Cabarrus. Jaun Sedano (39-40-79) played well all day with a couple of birdies to capture fifth place. Mike Edwards (37-41-78) and Phil VanGeersdaelen (39-39-78) would visit the scorecard for fourth and third money. Mike would take 4th while Phil takes third. Tom Cone (39-38-77) appears to be finding some form as he never dropped shots on back to back holes and limited those dropped shots to bogey. Tom also threw in a noise birdie on 18 on his way to second. Seth Hawkins (37-38-75), playing out of the Triad Chapter, may have had one of the more exciting rounds of the day. While Seth did have a couple doubles on the card, he kept his focus and erased those with four birdies on his way to victory.

Division 1had a bevy of players positioning themselves for the top of the leaderboard all day. With 12 of the 17 players having a legitimate chance at winning the event. Ultimately it came down to 6 players late in the round playing for second and third place money. Brian Hayes (38-36-74), Scott Patnode (35-39-74), and Carolina Triad Chapter owner Ivan Jones (35-39-74) all played well, but would come up short on the scorecard playoff. Tripp Shelton (38-36-74) would double the par 3 7th along with a bogey on 10. His lone birdie of the day would come 18 to secure third place. George Harris (37-36-73) put together a very consistent round with 3 bogeys and a pair of birdies to take solo second. If you’re wondering why Mark Ballew (34-33-67) has the big smile in his victory photo, it’s for good reason. Mark would drop a single shot on the day, while adding 6 birdies to the round to win by 6. Smile Mark, well done.
