The Amateur Players Tour Tulsa Chapter kicked off the 2024 season with an unforgettable event at Battle Creek Golf Club in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma on a blustery Saturday morning.  With windy weather more favorable to a British Open, a full field of 68 players teed it up in search of the top prize.  APT Tulsa welcomed a remarkable twenty-five new players to the opening event of 2024.

Getting things going and wasting no time establishing himself as a “Player of the Year” contender, Riley Reed birdied the final hole and took advantage of an Andy Proctor mistake to steal the win and pick up his first victory in Division 1 after being promoted in October of last year.  The 2023 D1 POY, Proctor lead almost the entire day before finding trouble on 18.  Reed, who had played well in previous APT -OKC chapter events earlier this season, stayed steady on a back nine that saw wind gust up to 45 mph and a 25 mile an hour constant wind, then birdied the final hole to take the $225 first place Visa gift card and Sterling trophy home.  Proctor dropped back into a tie with Sajan Patel for the runner up spot.  A total of 15 players signed up for a strong D1 field.

Division 2 saw in first time winner with Fort Smith’s Dennis Joyce finally breaking through for his maiden win.  Joyce, a two-year veteran with APT, played arguably the steadiest round of the day in the treacherous wind conditions to run away from the field and win by 5 shots over first year player DJ Tabor.  APT-OKC chapter owner Keith Tilghman hung on in the end to round out the podium in 3rd place.  Joyce picked up the $200 first place gift card while securing victory #1 on the APT tour.

Division 3 had the strongest field of the day with a total of 19 players checking in looking to take home the win.  In the end it was newcomer Chris Matheny of Owasso, Oklahoma taking home the $240 first prize and beautiful Sterling Crystal trophy.  Norman Springwater, and Michael Foster tied for 2nd place with Michael King finishing 4th.   Division 3 remains the strongest field in APT Tulsa with 10 new players registering for Battle Creek.  D3 will be a fun division to watch as things heat up as the coveted “Player of Year” battle moves into summer.

Division 4 saw Khurram Pervaiz of Tulsa pick up his first win of 2024, 2nd win overall by holding off Mike Rugg on the final hole.  All tied on the 18th tee box, Rugg struggled with a double bogey to Pervaiz’s bogey and lost what would have been his maiden victory with APT Tulsa.  Chris Lindenau of Spiro, Oklahoma, who shot a remarkable 3-over 39 on a wind-blown outward half, ended up third while another newcomer, Michael Byrd of Fort Smith Arkansas came home 4th in his first APT Tulsa event.

Division 5 winner Steve Lumpkin has knocked on the door many times in an effort to pick up his second APT victory and Saturday he finally achieved that goal.  Lumpkins’ victory didn’t come easy as Natrone Wolfe lost his tee shot on the final hole to open the door for Lumpkin.  Wolfe’s mistake and Lumpkins’ good fortune was just enough to take home the first place Visa card worth $200.  Eighty-one-year-old Richard McMahan of Fort Smith, Arkansas, proved that APT’s “division for everyone” statement rings true as he persevered the 45-mph wind gust to come home a solid 4th in a good field of twelve D5 players.

Mike Rugg, who struggled on the 18th hole to finish 2nd in D4, took consolation in winning the Senior net portion of the event by posting an even par 72.  Nineteen seniors signed in to take part in the popular “Senior Net” handicapped contest held at each APT Tulsa chapter event. Division winners Dennis Joyce and Chris Matheny rounded out the top 3.

Next up for APT Tulsa is a trip around the popular Indian Springs Country Clubs “River Course” in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma.  Last years event sold out early on the “Lakes Course” and this event will surely follow suit.  Players are encouraged to sign-up early for this tournament as only 22 spots remain as of this writing.

Special thank you goes out to Colton Jackson, Dee Roadman the entire Battle Creek staff, for their hospitality Friday and Saturday.  APT Tulsa looks forward to coming back and playing this gem in Broken Arrow.
