Mooresville, NC.  Finally……After back-to-back Rain outs, the Charlotte Chapter finally caught some good weather and got to play a round without the fear of a thunderstorm ruining things.  Temps that started out in the mid 50’s to start the day turned into a gorgeous afternoon with temps in the mid 80’s.  Mooresville GC never disappoints and again proved to be a great test of golf for the players on this day with great competition in all divisions.

In Division 1, We had a field of 16 golfers and a purse of $480.  The 18th hole proved to be a pivotal hole for several players on this day.  Coming into 18 with a 1 stroke lead sitting at Even Par, Tim Barto (CLT) saw his playing partner, George Harris (CLT) reached the par 5 in 2 and made his eagle putt to take a 1 stroke lead at 1 under.  With George making his eagle, Time was now faced with a 5-foot birdie putt to tie and force a potential playoff.  He did and now both had to wait a little while to see if Andrew Furr (CLT) could make eagle on 18 to make it a 3-way tie. It was not meant to be as Andrew made Par to finish in Solo 3rd with a score of 73.  George and Tim went back to #10 to start their playoff.  It took 2 holes to settle the score with Tim making a birdie on the 2nd playoff hole.

On the Senior Side, Harris takes top honors.

Congrats Tim and George on your victories!!

In Division 2 a field of 26 players and a purse of $780 up for grabs.  Jimmy Popp (CLT) who was a late added posted a 75 (+3) with a earlier tee time and had to wait.  Sitting in the clubhouse, Jimmy had to wait it out as he was anxiously watching the leaderboard as well as the UFL game between the Michigan Panthers and the Birmingham Stallions.  Coming into hole 17, John Wayne Parrish (Triad) was sitting with a 1 stroke lead.  An Unfortunate triple bogie on the tough 17th let the lead slip away.  Going from 1 up to 2 down forced John Wayne to make eagle to force a playoff.  John Wayne came up a little short making birdie on the par 5, 18th to secure second place honors shooting 76(+4).  In third place was Tony Mangini (CLT) shooting 77 (+5).  We had a tie for 4th between Terry Newsome(Triad)  and Travis Wartluft (CLT) with both players shooting 78 (+6).

One the Senior Side again it was Jimmy Popp winning making it a true Double Dip earning $550 ($340 open and $210 Sr) which he accepted in a Physical Visa Gift Card.  Parish took second and Newsome and Wartluft shared 3rd place honors.

Congrats Jimmy on your Double Dip!!!

In Division 3, our largest field of the day with 34 players competing for a purse of $1020, saw more drama at the end of the round. Mac Macmillan (Triad) who had been struggling a bit this year posted a round of 77 (+5) and was the clubhouse leader as he watched the leaderboard.  Juan Sedano, another triad member, came to the closing stretch of 17 and 18 with a 2-stroke lead.  Anyone that has played Mooresville GC will tell you that no lead is safe with those 2 closing holes.  Juan got by 17 with a par but a double bogie on 18 forced a tie between the two Triad members.  We found a gap in play on Hole 5 for them to begin their playoff.  Best described as a pillow fight, the two competitors got a little nervous and this playoff went 3 holes.  Juan made par of the 3rd hole to secure not only the Open, but Sr Title as well.  3rd place went to Quinn Wilson (Upstate) with a score of 81 (+9). Josh Ray (CLT) saw his game turnaround on the back 9 with the assistance of some fiery birdie juice and finished in solo 4th with a score of 82 (+10).  Joe Cannatti (CLT) and Dan Ahlers (CLT) finished in a tie for 5th with scores of 83 (+11)

On the Senior Side, Juan and Mac shared the Sr victory which Joe Cannatti took home 3rd place honors.

Congrats to Juan and Mac on their Victories today.

In Division 4 of the contest, where 18 players competed for a purse of $540, Neal De La Cruz (CLT) and Brandon Long (Myrtle Beach) tied for the win with scores of 84 (+12).  Either player could have won outright, but a bogie by Brandon and Double Bogie by Neal forced another sudden death playoff.  In this case, it only took 1 hole to settle the score with Neal making a bogie on Hole 10 to claim the title.  In solo 3rd was TJ Williams (Triad) missing the playoff by only 1 shot himself shooting 85 (+13).

On the Senior Side, Spencer Bensch (CLT) takes home 1st place with a score of 87 (+15) and Ronnie Thornton (CLT) takes home 2nd with a  score of 88 (+16)

Congrats Neal and Spencer on your Victories today!

In Division 5 we had a small field of 8 on this day.    Doug Willie (CLT), our reigning Division 5 champion continues with his winning ways.  Steady play and no Triple Bogies on his card sees Doug shoot a score of 90 (+18) and a 6 shot victory over Derrick Ray (CLT) who shot 96 (+24)

On the Senior Side, Doug also claims the victory to make it a true double dip.

Congrats Doug on your Double DIp!!!

Our Next event in Charlotte is at the Private Country Club, Gaston CC.  This event is a 12-noon shotgun and will sell out. I hate turning players away, so please sign up early to avoid getting shut out.
