Our first event of the 2024 calendar year started off by having a massive rain out, but it was oh so worth the reschedule!  78 degrees, sunny, and a slight breeze with green green grass meant it was an absolute perfect day to be on the golf course.  But with all the rain recently, it also meant blue grass rough that was difficult to get a club through, as well as some very tricky lies if you missed a green.  Fairways and greens were a massive bonus.

In a packed Division 1 with 18 players, Rob Spriggel had given himself a small 2 stroke lead going into the back 9.  With Colby Schuster, Jacob Dittmer and Holden Missey only 2 shots back, the chase was on.  Rob opened the door with back to back bogeys on 10 and 11, and a short missed putt on 18 for a par saw him finish at 4 over par for the event.  The closest chasers all fell away after a tough back 9, but Keaton Black who was 4 over on the front, shot an even par back 9 and found himself in a playoff.  Rob and Keaton went back to the par 5 tenth hole, and a birdie by Rob made him the champion.

In division 2, loaded with 24 players, some great scores were shot by a number of players.  First timer Josh Nutter was in the lead at even par at the turn, with one birdie and one bogey on the front nine.  Being chased closely by Matt Doud, Logan Dahmer, Matt Thorman and Eric Anderson.  Josh struggled with a string of bogies on the back 9 though, opening up the door for Matt Doud and Logan Dahmer.  Logan had 3 birdies and 3 bogies on the back 9 to shoot even par on the back and 3 over total, to best Matt Doud’s 4 over round and take the win.

Zach Richcreek started off right, with a birdie on one.  Unfortunately he followed that up with 5 bogey’s in a row, but two spectacular birdies on 8 and 9 set him up for the lead on the front 9, just 2 in front of Matt Morgan.  Zach’s back 9 was a bit more of an adventure, finding himself 7 over par after hole 15, and only a couple strokes ahead of Chris Hubbard who after a rough front 9, got it together and was only a couple over par on the back.  Zach holed out on the difficult par 4 16th for an eagle, giving him a little breathing room that he needed, especially with Chris making birdie on 18.  Zach was able to finish it off with a great round of 78 to take home his first win.

Zach Terry found himself back in form this weekend, playing one of his best tournament rounds of his career.  Rocky Metcalfe tried to chase him down, also posting one of his best rounds, but Zach had a two stroke lead over Rocky at the turn, and was one ahead of John Bilek.  John struggled a bit on the back 9, and Zach and Rocky both continued their solid play.  Zach would take the win with a 10 over par 82, and Rocky was right behind him for second place with an 84.

Division 5 guys battled it out to the very end.  It looked like it was bound to be a battle between William Yancey and Tanner Miller after the front 9, who were 9 and 11 over par respectively.  Ethan Smith looked to be out of contention after a struggle on the front at 16 over par.  But Ethan found some magic on the back 9, playing the last 8 holes in even par with a clutch up and down on the 18th hole to save par with everyone watching from the clubhouse.  That up and down secured his win over Tanner Miller by 1 stroke, who also made par on 18.  Ethan is a multiple event winner, and if he can keep up that kind of play like he did on the back 9, he’ll be moving up soon which is his goal.
