2023 Greer Golf Tournament Results

Playoffs were the theme of the day on Saturday as the Upstate Amateur Players Tour hosted its tournament at Greer Golf Club in the Upstate of South Carolina. Four divisions were decided by a playoff during Saturday’s action as the competitors battled for cash and VISA gift card prizes throughout the day.

Saturday brought temperatures in the low-80s, setting up for a beautiful day of golf. The competitors took advantage of the pristine conditions to card some low rounds.

For nearly 70 years Greer Golf Club has provided Upstate golfers with a challenging test featuring an 18-hole championship layout. The course has undergone several upgrades in the past decades, including a new 10,000-square-foot clubhouse constructed in 2009. In 2015, all the greens on the entire golf course were changed from Bent Grass to Diamond Zoysia, giving the course nearly 30% more surface area for putting.

The Upstate Amateur Players Tour provides golfers of all skill levels with an opportunity to compete on some of the best golf courses in the area. Created by the players, for the players, the Upstate Amateur Players Tour features ten divisions, including senior divisions as well. The tour is preparing for its next tournament on July 1 at Cherokee National Golf and Recreation Club in Gaffney, SC.

Here’s a recap of Saturday’s round at Greer Golf Club:

Division 1 – Four players were tied after 18-holes of golf on Saturday as all four shot even par, 72. Mike Hartin emerged victorious from the group as he used a par on the second hole to edge Jacob Sigmon.

Hartin birdied the par-four 18th hole to advance to the playoff. Along with Sigmon, Thomas Owens and Sam Gravely also finished in a tie for second place after shooting even par. Owens put on a back nine charge to reach the playoff, birding two of his final four holes to get back to even par.

John Schiemer finished fifth after posting a round of 73, which included three birdies on the card.

Senior Division 1 – While Jacob Sigmon just missed out on the victory in Division 1, he managed to take home the top spot in Senior Division 1 on Saturday. Sigmon outlasted Thomas Owens in a playoff with a par on the first hole to win the division.

Owens, who shot even par on the day, made four birdies during his round. Greg Moore and Joey Golinski finished tied for third as both players shot 78.

Division 2 – Shayne Burger used a steady string of pars on the inward nine to clear Christopher White by one shot to win Division 2 on Saturday. Burger shot 74 in a round that featured 16 pars and just two bogeys.

White finished second with his round of 75 that included four birdies on the day. Craig Vaughn came home third with a round of 76. Vaughn shot just one over par on the front nine before a double bogey to close the day at the 18th hole.

Jake Williams and Garrett Blyler finished tied for fourth with rounds of 77.

Senior Division 2 – Shayne Burger’s impressive round earned him the top honors in Senior Division 2 as well. Carlos Mojica finished second, four shots behind Burger with a round of 78. Mojica closed his round in style with a birdie on the par-four finishing hole.

Travis Wartluft finished third after firing a round of 79. Like Mojica, Wartluft also birdied the final hole. Tim Beckham shot 80 to finish fourth. David Moses, Bob Grove, and Jeff Pittillo shot 81 to finish in a tie for fifth place.

Division 3 – Extra golf was needed in Division 3 on Saturday as well with James Dillard and Nikki Strandell both shooting 79 to lead the way. Dillard used a par on the second playoff hole to score the victory.

Dillard parred his final four holes to reach the playoff as Strandell used back-to-back birdies on the 14th and 15th holes to battle back into contention.

Todd Lynch, Lane Traynham, Shannon Leonhardt, and Andy Murrow all tied for third place after posting rounds of 81.

Senior Division 3 – James Dillard’s round of 79 was also enough to win Senior Division 3 on Saturday. Todd Lynch and Andy Murrow finished in a tie for second place with rounds of 81.

Murrow’s round included two birdies, the last of which came on the closing nine with just four holes to play. Lynch parred three of his final four holes to finish runner-up.

Tommy Boyter shot 82 and finished fourth. Wayne Blyler and Travis Blackwell both shot 84 to tie for fifth place.

Division 4 – Justin Sartain and Kevin Vaughn battled down the stretch at Greer Golf Club on Saturday as 18 holes just weren’t enough to determine a winner. In the end, it was Sartain who rose to the occasion, birding the par-five 1st hole in a playoff to win Division 4.

Vaughn finished runner-up after a round that included a pair of back-nine birdies. Eric Rookard finished in third place, firing a round of 86. John Pearson, Scott Bryant, and Darrell Arledge finished tied for fourth after shooting rounds of 88.

Senior Division 4 – Eric Rookard outlasted a strong group of challengers on Saturday to win Senior Division 4. Rookard shot 86 to lead the way. His round included two birdies, one on each side, to take home the victory.

Division 5 – George Bright made par on the par-five 1st hole during a playoff on Saturday to determine the winner in Division 5. Bright was tied with Tim Kunkel following the conclusion of the round as both players posted rounds of 88.

Danny Sullivan shot 91 to finish third in the division. Steven Daniels and Kyle Macklin tied for fourth place with rounds of 92. Daniels finished his round off strong with two pars to close the day. Macklin’s excitement for the day came on the par-five 9th hole with an eagle.
