Capital City Classic Tournament Results

The 2023 Amateur Players Tour West Virginia kicked off their fall season at Edgewood Country Club with sunny November skies and a light breeze. The golf gods smiled with perfect weather in West Virginia, with only a brief rain shower as a full field took to the George Cobb designed golf course to claim the first titles of the season.

Last season was a battle between Tyler Hetzer and Lindy Sullivan for the championship, and the new season started just where we left off. Lindy claimed the 2022 season championship as Tyler looked for revenge to start the season off right. Coming to the par 5 18th hole, Lindy led by 1. Tyler needed a birdie and he was able to make that happen, as Lindy missed his birdie putt and settled for par, sending us to our first playoff of the season. On the first playoff hole, Tyler took that momentum from the 18th hole and took a par on the par 4 1st hole, as Lindy made bogey, handing Tyler the 1st win of the young season.

Tink Brown had an up and down 2022 season, with flashes of dominate golf, but was unable to find consistent play down the stretch. Division 3 tour newcomer Woody Burch was battling with Tink early, but the back 9 took Woody out of contention and Tink was able to put a full round together to defeat Craig Jackson by 6 and claim his first victory of the season.

Defending Division 4 champion Tyler Ellison has taken his skills to D3, while 2022 D4 runner-up Chris Lusk looks to make a run at the championship this season. Matt McGee finished 2022 strong, claiming a victory in a playoff over Joey Fyall in the 2022 finale. Chris and Matt battled back and forth for 15 holes, but the final 3 holes took Chris out of contention as Matt McGee was able to defeat Joey Fyall by 4 shots to keep his momentum up into the 2023 season.

Last season looked like it belonged to Patrick McNeely, but Pat was unable to play from May until September, leaving the door open for Jason Hancock to claim the championship. Charles Belcher battled all season long last year and came up short in his quest for his first career win and championship. Charles led early and battled with Patrick going into hole 16. Charles however took a triple on the par 5 16th compared to Patrick’s bogey, which gave Patrick a 1 shot lead, and he wouldn’t look back as he went on to win by 4 shots, finishing literally in the dark.

Congratulations to all of our champions and thanks to everyone who came out to play. Special thanks to Craig Berner and his team at Edgewood Country Club for hosting us on a perfect day for golf. We’re off next week, but will pick the fall season back up at Parkersburg Country Club on Saturday November 19th. Registration ends at 10:24 AM on Thursday November 17th
