Woodfin Ridge Golf Tournament Results

Woodfin Ridge was host to the Amateur Players Tour-Upstate Chapter played in Inman South Carolina.

The course was in good condition from tee to green even though the greens hadn’t fully healed from the punch roughly a month ago.

Division 5 saw Stephen Herbert (43-43-86) had his best day on tour, winning by 5 shots and breaking 90 for the first time. Stephen has played well in his four events since joining the APT with a third, a second and back-to-back wins.

Division 4 saw two players separate themselves from the field early. Roy would get off to a solid start on his day dropping 3 birdies and shoot 1 over on his front nine. Ben kept pace with the leader with a birdie on 4 and found himself 3 over 39 at the turn. Our leaders found the back nine a little more volatile with Ben able to make up his two shot deficit to catch Roy after 18. Ben Wylie (39-40-79) and Roy Williams (37-42-79) would require four additional holes to determine the Division 4 champion. Roy would make a routine par on the par 5 4th hole to Ben’s bogey to take the Division 4 title.

Division 3 would also require an on course playoff to determine our champion. William Buie (38-42-80) would take the early lead with a solid 2 over par. Matt Miller (40-40-80) also played solid and consistency to position himself atop the leaderboard. Both players brimmed with confidence as they headed back to the opening hole for their playoff. William would find himself against a tree root on his approach. Matt would take advantage of his competitors misfortune with a routine par to capture the victory. Something tells me Matt Minder will be hearing some additional trash talk on the next APT Live event. Just a hunch.

Division 2 would be a packed leaderboard as usual but with new names. Charles Devenney (37-39-76) appears to be regaining his form as he posts a 1 over opening 9. Nick Hinton (37-39-76) would also find himself atop the leaderboard also with a 1 over opening nine. Our very own Phil VanGeersdaelen (38-36-74) would sit 1 back of the leaders. Charles wasn’t able to get a few birdie putts to drop on the back nine but was the early clubhouse leader. Nick Hinton was on cruise control at 1 under entering the final three holes. Nick would unfortunately stumble on 16 and 17 and fall back to third place on the scorecard playoff. Charles would take second on the scorecard playoff. Phil plotted along with a birdie and bogey on the back nine and navigating the finishing three holes better than most of the field to capture the title. With four 3rd place finishes, 3 2nd place finishes and three wins on the year, Phil will be our new D1 mark for the remainder of the year and will be notified when he reads this.

Division 1 had three players battling for the title at Woodfin Ridge. Most of the day it appeared to be two players with one lurking. Matt Moore (35-46-81) had his game firing most of the day and as he tussled for lead. His run for the title would fall after an unfortunate finish. After the sting of disappointment dissipates, Matt will return with confidence. Greg Moore (35-37-72) would also find himself atop the leaderboard after 9. A lapse of concentration on the 16th green would diminish Greg’s chances of winning as he settled for second. Scott Roberts (35-35-70) continues his steady play. Scott would drop a single shot offset by three birdies to secure his sixth victory of the year.

Quote of the day. “Scott, can you stay in Charlotte? We’re tired of getting whooped everytime you come up here.”

Thank you to all our members and guests, representing four different APT Chapters, for joining us at Woodfin Ridge Golf Club!

An additional thank you to Woodfin Ridge, their members and their staff for welcoming the Amatuer Players Tour and helping us make this event a success while showcasing the course.
