Poppy Ridge Golf Course Tournament Results

The third event of the Northern California APT season was contested at Poppy Ridge in Livermore, California. Typical April conditions at Poppy Ridge greeted our players as temperatures reached the high 70s and winds peaked in the middle teens. As we typically see in California, it was a great weather day for golf, with wind speeds in the teens being the only possible detraction.

New member John Lawrence Pepito with a 74(+2) was our champion in Division 1. John trailed Jacob Boyce by two after the opening eight holes, but things dramatically changed on the 9th. Jacob, playing in the group ahead of John, made a rare bogey. John took advantage of the opening and completed the hole with an eagle. John left the opening nine with momentum and a one-shot lead. Besides Jacob with an opening nine 37, other players in the hunt after the opening nine were Alex Sylvan, Ony Velez and Ron Yim who all carded opening nine 40s. The first part of the back nine saw little movement on the leaderboard with players trading birdies, pars and bogeys until the difficult par four 15th. This hole separated the players in Division 1 with the following scores: one birdie, one bogey, four doubles and one triple. John made the bogey and increased his lead to four. John finished his day with three pars and resulted in the victory. John took home a $200 visa gift card and a framed custom APT Flag trophy for his win. Second-place finisher Jacob Boyce took home a $50 visa gift card.

New member Che Touch with a 77(+5) was our champion in Division 2. After an opening nine 41, Che opened up a three-shot lead over his nearest competitor UT Ganaprakasam. Che started the back nine with a birdie and never looked back. He completed the remaining eight holes with seven pars and a bogey for a closing nine even par 36. Che took home a $150 visa gift card and a framed custom APT Flag trophy for his victory. This is Che’s first event on the APT, and we look forward to seeing him again soon. Special thank you to Troy Shedeed from the SoCal chapter for making the trip up north to join us for this event.

Jeffrey Taylor with an 84(+12) was our champion in Division 3. I do not recall another event where almost every single competitor had at least a share of the lead at one point during the day. I was looking forward to our first ever playoff event in the APT North Cal chapter, but we will have to wait. The opening nine leaders were Jeffrey and Philip Hankin who both carded 42s, followed by Jason Tatum’s 43, AJ Quintero’s 44, Steven Archuleta’s 45. Jason’s par on the 10th would see him take the lead after both Jeffrey and Philip made triple bogey. After the 11th, AJ added his name to the lead with Philip and Jason after Jason came back to the field with a double bogey on the difficult par three. Philip made par on the 12th to take the solo lead, but every other player was only one back leaving the remaining six holes to decide the champion. Jason took control of the event after he made five straight pars. It seemed like the nerves might have hit on the 18th after Jeffrey carded a double bogey, but it was good enough for a one-shot victory. Jeffrey took home a $225 visa gift card and a framed custom APT Flag trophy for his victory. Special thank you to Jason Tatum from the Kansas City Chapter who joined us during his business trip to the Bay Area.
Tracy Castro was our champion in Division 4 after a round of 87(+15). Tracy played solid on the front and his 43 resulted in a two-shot lead over Billie Black and his 45, Felix Monjes struggled on the opening nine with a 50, but persevered and finish the back with a reasonable bounce back 45. Billie chipped away into the lead and made birdie on the 14th and tied things up with Tracy. Tracy responded with back-to-back pars on 15 & 16 and found himself with a two-shot lead. Tracy made a costly triple on the 17th and relinquished the lead back to Billie. The 18th decided things as Tracy made a bogey and Billie made a triple which resulted in the one-shot victory for Tracy. Tracy would take home a $120 visa gift card and a framed custom APT Flag trophy for his victory.

Todd Brown was our champion in Division 5 after a round of 91(+19). Todd, JC Womack, Manny Murillo and John Spradling all completed the front with matching 48s, so it was anyone’s event after the opening nine. Todd took a one-shot lead after going par, bogey on the 10th and 11th. Todd made a double on the 12th and JC Womack our Silverado North Champion took a one-shot lead. JC expanded his lead to two-shots over the next two holes and arrived at the 15th tee with the lead. As we witnessed in Division 1, the 15th was also the difference maker in Division 5. JC made a costly triple bogey, while Todd made a solid par and headed to the 16th with a one-shot lead. Todd made birdie on the 16th and finished his round with bogeys on 17 and 18 and completed the victory. Todd took home a $150 visa gift card and a framed custom APT Flag trophy for his victory.

We appreciate everyone’s support and look forward to seeing you at our next event down south in La Quinta, CA at PGA West Stadium and Nicklaus courses during Memorial Day weekend on May 28th-29th.
