Charlotte’s Mooresville Golf Club Results

[read_time]

Southern summer weather has finally arrived in the Charlotte area!

On a hot and steamy day, the Amateur Players Tour – Charlotte Chapter teed it up at Mooresville Golf Club in Mooresville, NC. A municipal course which is always in great condition. With a front nine that reflects a links style course and a back nine with a more traditional North Carolina tree lined design, players would need to showcase skill and course management.

Division 5 would see two players establish the pace of the day. Gene Merchant (46-45-91) stayed within a shot of the leader most of the day but would settle for second. The day belonged to Bill Sturgeon ((45-44-89). While he stumbled on the opening hole, Bill was able to steady himself and minimize his dropped shots as he secured his victory.

Division 4 was a packed leaderboard most of the day. Scorching the course on the opening nine saw three players set the pace. Justin Keaton (40-43-83), the APT West Virginia Chapter Owner, only two shots out of the lead at the turn, stumbled on 11, 12 and 13 and would settle for third. Dean Barron (38-44-82), shooting 38 on his out nine, put himself in contention again. Dean’s transition to the confined back nine wasn’t as he planned. Although with a nifty up and down on the challenging 17th gave himself a chance for the victory. After 18, Dean would settle for second. Paul Callaway (38-42-80) took his home course knowledge and put it to good use. Paul set the tone with a birdie on 10 and managed the difficult back nine better than most on his way to his first victory.

Division 3 required players to shoot in the 70’s to have a chance at victory. Guest Joe Burger (39-40-79) kept himself in contention by limiting dropped shots to only bogey. Burger secured third place with his steady play. Joseph Cannatti (38-40-78), also played well for the day while securing second place. Randy Quis (36-36-75) was the player to beat. His three over par 39 on the front nine with 3 bogies set him in second at the turn. Randy went on to play back nine without dropping a shot as he cruised to victory.

Division 2 was exciting. Five players had a chance for the victory going into the back nine. Travis Wartluft (39-38-77) settles for fifth after his steady round. Wesley jones (40-37-77) takes fourth on the scorecard playoff with his solid back nine play. Jim Goulding (37-39-76) played well all day until the treacherous 17th. Jim would settle for third place. Donnie Hasen (38-37-75) appeared to be the player to beat with his three consecutive birdies on 13, 14 and 15. Marc Janse van Rensburg (38-37-75) may have thought he let his chances slip away with a bogie on 15. Marc, never a player to give up easily, birdies 17 and 18 to force a playoff. The on-course playoff would only take one hole as Donnie par was good enough to earn the victory.

Division 1 had four players packed atop the leader board separated by two shots. Travis Powell (40-37-77) and Scott Goodelle (37-40-77) would finish T-3. Patrick O’Brien (37-39-76), playing in his first event of the year, played solidly all day to keep himself in contention. Patrick ultimately would settle for second place. Scott Patnode (37-38-75), playing solid golf both on the APT and in CGA/USGA qualifiers finds himself atop the leaderboard for his second APT victory this year.
