2023 Cheraw Golf Tournament Results

[read_time]

What a Start to the season.  Another fantastic turnout on a morning that saw a steady cold breeze that made the players in the morning wear 2 or 3 layers of clothing.  With Rain on Friday, the course was in fantastic shape and the players were allowed to drive on the fairways which had already popped and were starting to green up providing some nice definition from fairway to rough.  85 players from 8 APT Chapters came to Cheraw, SC to play one of the best State Park Golf courses in the country.

In Division 1 it was a close battle all day with 3 to 4 players around the top of the leaderboard all day.  After getting eliminated on the 2nd playoff hole last event at Lancaster, Tim Barto (CLT) closed the event with a Birdie on 18 to win by 2 shooting 73 (+1).  Second place honors go to Scott Roberts (CLT) with a score of 75 (+3)

On the Senior Side, it was Jeff Helms claiming 1st place with a score of 81 (+9)

Congrats Tim and Jeff!!

In Division 2, just like in Division 1, a birdie on the last hole was key.  William Werner (CLT) was one stroke back of Tom Cone who was relaxing in the clubhouse after a fantastic round of 73 (+1).  William knew what was needed and did what had to be done to force the playoff.  Returning to the first hole, both players made par on the first 2 playoff holes, and headed to #3.  William made a birdie on the 3rd hole to win the Playoff and claim 1st place honors. We had a tie for 3rd with James Cox (CLT) and Lonail Locklear (MB) both shoot matching 77’s (+5). James and Lonail will split 3rd and 4th place prizes.

On the Senior Side, IT was Tom Cone with win followed by Herb White (CLT) with a score of 78 (+6)

Congrats William and Tom!!!

In Division 3 we had another competitive contest with the 18th hole playing a pivotal role in the outcome.  With a one stroke lead coming to 18, Mark Blankenship (CLT) in his first event of the season made an unfortunate triple bogie on the closing hole and ending with a score of 83 (+11) .  While this was happening, Allen Hagen was in the Clubhouse after shooting 82 (+10) and was waiting anxiously as he was only 1 shot back of Jesse Johnson (CHS) who was playing 18.  In the end Jesse would make par and seal the victory shooting 81 (+9).  These were the top 3 finishers in Division 3.

On the Senior side just like the open side, It was Jesse and Allen claiming the top 2 spots making this a DOUBLE DIP kind of day.

Congrats Jesse on your double Dip!!!

In Division 4 this was really the only Division Contest that was not very dramatic.  Mike Fitzgerald (CLT) got off to a fast start and never looked back.  I asked what the difference was today to which Mike said, he was finally healthy.  Mike’s round of 83 (+11) was good enough for a 5 shot victory over Myron Samuels (CLT) who is getting tired of finishing in 2nd place again shooting an 88 (+16).  3rd place went to Lee Touchton (CLT) shooting 89 (+17).  In 4th place we had a tie between Tommy Stokes (CHS), Jimmie Chapman (CLT) and Neal De La Crus with all players shooting (90).  These players will all split the 4th place prize.

On the Senior side just like the open side, the top two spots were the same as the open division with Michael and Myron claiming the awards.

Congrats Michael on your double Dip!!!

In Division 5 it was a battle all day long and in this division it all about who can stay away from the triple bogie.  Making a few pars goes a long way in doing well in Division 5. As the dust settled, Jonathon Gladden (CLT) was the best on this day shooting 91 (+19).  Second place went to Steve Kwon (CLT) with a 94 (+22).

On the Senior Side it was Doug Willie (CLT) taking top honors with a  95 (+23) and Rivia Brown (TRI) and Lance Blackshear (CLT) finishing in a Tie for 2nd place.

Congrats Jonathon and Doug on your victories!!!
