Winterstone Golf Course Tournament Results

[read_time]

It was another hot one in Kansas City, but a nice breeze made it bearable today.  The staff at Winterstone Golf Course had the playing conditions fantastic!  Hats off to them!  But even with the great conditions, and being a relatively “short” course, you can see how much a small tee box advantage means out here given the scores.

Robert Spriggel was playing in his first event in Division 1, and showed the field exactly why he was moved up.  While Kory Glasgow, JR Munson, Larry Langley might not have had their best stuff today, Robert Spriggel did exactly what he’s been doing.  Win.  Robert took a comfortable win today with a 4 over par 76.

Division 2 was so close to a 3 way playoff, but Bill Campbell couldn’t close it out on 18, leaving it up to Tricen Lewellen and Tyler Reynolds.  Reynolds has been on a hot streak lately, while Tricen has been right in the thick of things lately but couldn’t pull it out.  But today was the day for Tricen to take the victory on the first playoff hole, carding a 6 over par 78.

Division 3 was jam packed today.  With over 30 players in the field, and 8 players separated by 2 strokes with only a few holes to go, it seemed to be anyone’s game.  Grant Scarfino set the clubhouse lead with a solid 7 over par 79, but still had to wait to see what Travis Buckley would do after Scott Wroubel had an untimely double on 17 to finish at 9 over par.  Travis just couldn’t hold it together, also finishing at 9 over par, and Grant gets a big comeback win after his injury.

Chris Hubbard and Jim Reeves were trading blows, going back and forth, changing the lead in D4 as things started to come down to the wire.  Jim had back to back birdies on 16 and 17 to take a two stroke lead going into 18, needing a bogey or better to get the win.  But he pulled his tee shot into the water and now needed to save a double to get into a playoff, and he was able to do just that, tying Hubbard at 12 over par.  Hubbard has made a habit of being the bridesmaid and never the bride, but maybe it was his time.  The playoff lasted 3 holes, and ultimately, Jim Reeves took the victory, his first on the APT.

Division 5 looked to be a lock by rookie Justin Grzybowski, holding a comfortable 5 shot lead with 7 to play, but back to back triple bogeys welcomed back a lot of players.  Justin and friend Jeffrey Epps were 1 and 2, with Rocky Metcalfe and Jim Heatherman right behind them.  But Justin and Jeffrey proved to be too much to overtake, and Justin was able to hold on to the win with an 18 over par 90.

Next weekend we’ll be down at Old Kinderhook with the Mid Missouri guys, then back in KC the following Sunday at Ironhorse before the season finale at Sycamore Ridge!  Who’s going to claim the player of the year for each division?!  Time to battle it out!
