Wytheville Golf Club Tournament Results

It rained. It poured. It was foggy. Tee times were supposed to start at 1:30, but a decision was made to go to a shotgun start at 2:00. Apparently that was the right decision, as around 1:50 it cleared up and remained cool and calm the rest of the day, setting up some exciting finishes among the flights.

Division 1: Jared Taylor fired a -1 under 35 on the front 9 and coasted down the back to win his 2nd event of the season.

Division 2: Mike Elliott led early at Wytheville, battling back and forth with James Jones, as the two were paired together. Brad Whitehead battled as well at the top, while Brandon Thompson stayed just behind through the front 9. In the last few events, Brandon Thompson has been just outside the top spot, before faltering late. Not today. Thompson went -2 under on his final 3 holes, to find the lead. Mike Elliott didn’t make many mistakes and played a very clean round, but Thompson’s 2 closing birdies were enough to hold off Mike for his 2nd win of the season. James Jones finished 3rd.

Division 3: Another great battle took place in D3, as Craig Jackson, Matt Robinson, and Dave Shepperd were all paired together and battled each other at the top all day. Lurking just behind these 3 was Matt Peretti, who was looking for his 1st win of the season. Down the stretch, it looked like Craig Jackson was going to find his 1st win of the season, until he came to the par 3 15th. Large green, tucked left pin location, and a pond designed to collect golf balls would derail Craig’s bid for his 1st win, as a triple on 15, and a double on 16 knocked Craig from the lead to 4th. Matt and Dave, 2 players usually battling at the top, were head to head once again, but it was Matt Peretti who played mistake free to close the show and capture his 1st career APT victory by 2 shots.

Division 4: James Chambers and Marshall Kiser led early, with Justin Keaton right on their tails. None of the players made worse than double bogey on the day, but it was the 8 par’s for Justin Keaton, that led him to his 2nd win in his last 3 starts. Congrats to James Chambers on his best round of the season. He could be nearing getting that 1st career APT win. Marshall Kiser is usually always a factor for the win, and I’m sure he’ll find another trophy again soon.

Division 5: Making his season debut in his first career tournament, Garry Moore battled at the top all day long. RJ Smith who has won his last 2 starts, was looking for his 3rd consecutive victory, but had to battle with Garry all day for the victory. With 2 holes to play, Garry and RJ were tied, but just like Craig Jackson finding trouble at hole 15, so too would Garry, as a triple bogey handed RJ his 3rd straight victory.

Congratulations to all of our champions, and thank you to everyone who came out to play and braved the forecast. Thank you to Wytheville Golf Club for hosting us. The greens were absolutely perfect and you wouldn’t even have known it rained, the course drained that well.

We on the West Virginia tour would like to wish everyone a happy and safe 4th of July holiday. Our next event is on Sunday July 10th at the always exciting Raven at Snowshoe Resort. Registration deadline is Thursday July 7th at 10:24 AM.
