A sold-out field of 42 golfers took on the challenge of Tom Fazio’s design at Wild Dunes Resort in Isle of Palms on Saturday as a part of the Charleston Amateur Players Tour. The Harbor Course at Wild Dunes Resort played as a great host for the tournament, offering golfers of a skill levels a chance to compete on one of the premier courses in the Lowcountry.

The Charleston Amateur Players Tour travels the Lowcountry of South Carolina, hosting tournaments at the top courses in the area. The tour is designed by the players, for the players, as golfers compete in friendly competition for cash and VISA gift card prizes.

The Harbor Course offers a diverse range of tees from 4,600 yards to 6,400 yards from the back set. The course features tightly bunkered fairways, small lagoons, saltwater marshes and six par 3s that pose a formidable test of every golfer’s game.

Here’s a breakdown of the results from Saturday’s tournament:

Division 1 – Two birdies on the inward nine helped Charles Hartley sustain his lead and claim the top spot in Division 1 on Saturday with a round of 71. Hartley fell to two over par on the front nine before taking advantage of the par-five ninth hole with a birdie. He made two more birdies in the next four holes to get back to level par.

Ryan Bakken finished runner-up with a round of 73, three-over par on the par-70 golf course. Phil Pfeiffer finished third after shooting 75. Pfeiffer had maintained a round of one-over par after six straight pars to open the back nine. A double bogey on the 16th hole, followed by a pair of bogeys on the 17th and 18th holes led to a round of five-over par.

Brent Densmore and Thomas Owens rounded out the top-five with rounds of 76 and 77, respectively.

Senior Division 1 – Charles Hartley’s round of one-over par 71 was also enough to land him the top-spot in Senior Division 1 on Saturday. Hartley’s round was highlighted by three birdies, including an even par score on the inward nine.

Phil Pfeiffer finished runner-up with a round of 75. The Murrells Inlet native got off to a hot start, birding two of his first three holes. Thomas Owens rounded out the division in third place with a round of 77.

Division 2 – Four players were separated by less than two shots atop the leaderboard in Division 2 on Saturday. When the smoke settled, Trent Whitfield emerged victorious with a round of 75. Whitfield made three birdies on the round as he pared five out of his last six holes to solidify the win.

Kevin Lyles shot 76 and finished second. Lyles shot just two-over par on the back nine, with seven pars on the inward nine. Chuck Bell and Phil VanGeersdaelen finished in a tie for third place with rounds of 77.

Jeremy Key rounded out the top-five in Division 2 after posting an 82.

Senior Division 2 – The battle atop the leaderboard in Division 2 also played out on centerstage in Senior Division 2. Trent Whitfield hoisted the trophy at the end with his round of 75. Whitfield found his groove nearing the turn as he birdied both the eighth and ninth holes, followed by another birdie on the 11th hole.

Kevin Lyles shot 76 to place runner-up, followed by Chuck Bell and Phil VanGeersdaelen with rounds of 77 to finish in a tie for third place.

Division 3 – Two steady strings of pars helped Allen Morrell edge out his challengers on Saturday to claim the top spot in Division 3. Morrell cleared a pair of challengers by just two shots to win the division. Morrell combined for eight pars on the day, four on each side.

Cliff Marcum and Darrell Johnson were close behind in the second-place spot with rounds of 84. Marcum’s round featured a birdie on the par-three third hole. He also pard five out of the first seven holes on the back nine.

Johnson pared three of his first five holes out of the gate en route to his round of 84. Jerome Maxie finished fourth with a round of 86. Chris Huge and Sean Mason shot 89 to finish in a tie for fifth place.

Senior Division 3 – One trophy just wasn’t enough for Allen Morrell as the Savannah, GA native also won Senior Division 3 on Saturday with his round of 82. Cliff Marcum and Darrell Johnson also finished in a tie for second place after posting a pair of 84s.

Jerome Maxie shot 86 to finish fourth, followed by Chris Huge who finished fifth after carding an 89.

Division 4 – A sluggish start turned into a fast finish for Mike Howell, who shot 82 and won Division 4 on Saturday. Howell shot nine-over par on the front nine before the round turned the corner. Howell opened the back nine even par through seven holes, aided by a birdie on the 13th hole.

Ronnie Thornton finished two shots back in second place. Thornton carded a round of 84, which featured six pars on the back nine. John Haynie shot 85 to finish third as Phillip Bush and Cooter Douglas rounded out the top-five with rounds of 88 and 90, respectively.

Senior Division 4 – Mike Howell’s round of 82 also cleared Ronnie Thornton by two shots in Senior Division 4 on Saturday. Thornton, who finished second, had a steady run on the back nine as he made a charge towards the top of the leaderboard.

John Haynie shot 85 to finish in third place. Haynie made a birdie on the par-five ninth hole, helping him to a 41 on the front nine. Phillip Bush and Cooter Douglas also finished top-five after carding rounds of 88 and 90.

Division 5 – Linette Coddington left the competition behind in Division 5 on Saturday as a round of 84 was more than enough to claim the top spot. Coddington birdied the par-four 10th holes before a string of three more pars on the inward nine.

Randy Poplin shot 92 to finish second. Eric Barnes finished in third place, carding a round of 98. John Greider and Cody Turner rounded out the division in fourth and fifth place, respectively.

Senior Division 5 – Eight shots separated the two competitors in Senior Division 5 as Linette Coddington also claimed the top spot with a round of 84. Coddington’s round featured seven pars and a birdie. Randy Poplin turned in a score of 92 to finish second.
