This weekend, the Amateur Players Tour returned to Texas for the Lone-Star Shootout at the beautiful Horseshoe Bay Resort, located an hour northwest of Austin in the Hill Country. The golf courses were in great shape, the accommodations first-class, with players enjoying temperatures in the low 80’s and sunny both days. The players were faced with two distinct challenges designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr. Slick Rock, the first course to be designed at Horseshoe Bay, featured a classic layout with fast and very undulating green complexes that challenged players in all divisions while Apple Rock featured stunning elevation changes and a challenging layout that weaved its way down to the bay and back to the resort. The 89 player field featured a total payout of $7,680 in VISA Gift Cards.
In Division 1, Marc Young (Houston) and Rick Coatney (Tulsa), jumped out to the early lead with 4-over par rounds of 76, chased closely by Doug Cristina (Birmingham) at +5 and Richard Michalsky (Houston) at +6. Sunday would turn out to be a different day as Apple Rock would be much more challenging tee to green with the elevation changes and tricky doglegs to navigate. Doug Cristina’s consistent play helped him to shoot a 6-over par 78, finishing the tournament at +11 and earning a 2-shot victory over Marc Young (Houston). John Todd (St. Louis) shot a steady 79-81 to round out the money in 3rd place.
In Division 2, Josh DeJarnette (St. Louis) opened with on his career best rounds on tour, firing a 5-over par 77 to hold a one-stroke advantage heading into Sunday’s final round over Greg Hawkins (Dallas/Fort Worth). Paul Stanton (Kansas City) sat 2 back at +7 and Raymond Dawson (Dallas/Fort Worth) was in the hunt at +8. Sunday’s second round would see big moves, as St. Louis’s Greg Garrett would have a day. Garrett followed up an opening round 86 with an exceptional round of 1-over par 73 to earn a 2-shot victory over Josh DeJarnette (St. Louis) and Greg Hawkins (Dallas/Fort Worth).
In Division 3, Chase Hatcher (Virginia Capital) jumped out to an early lead with a great round of 80 to take the lead going into Sunday. He was trailed closely by Stu Kambury (Dallas/Fort Worth) who shot an 82 to be within striking distance, James Medina (Houston) who was 3 back with an 83, and Scott Gennusa (Kansas City) was 4 back with a round of 84. Texas knowledge proved to be very important on Sunday, as Stu Kambury (Dallas/Fort Worth) made a charge on Sunday, tying for low-round of the day to earn a 3-shot victory at +24. 2nd place would go to Chase Hatcher (Virginia Capital), who had an impressive showing in his first trip to Texas. Rounding out the money in 3rd was James Medina (Houston), followed by Mike Paubel (St. Louis) in 4th, and Scott Gennusa (Kansas City) in 5th place.
In Division 4, Bob Koch (Iowa) and Steve Hamilton (Houston) jumped out to an early lead with opening rounds of 86 on the Slick Rock course. As Division 4, would be the tightest division of the weekend, Koch and Hamilton would battle back and forth all day on Sunday, with Koch pulling away late to earn a one-stroke victory over Hamilton and Rob Vincent (Iowa), who shot the low round of the day to pull within one. Winston Lewis (Kansas City) finished just 2 strokes back after solid rounds of 88-92.
In Division 5, Jason Wirowek (Utah) and Garye LaFevers (Phoenix) found themselves in a tight battle that carried over from Rams Hill just a few weeks ago in the California desert with Wirowek shooting an opening round 91 to take a 3 shot lead over Rams Hill Champion LaFevers heading into Sunday’s round. Sunday would belong to Arkansas’ Linda Wallace, who’s 92 would best the field by 8 strokes, but she would fall just short as Jason Wirowek (Utah) was able to hold off Garye Lafevers (3rd) and Linda Wallace (2nd) for a 2-stroke victory and his first major victory.
Greg Garrett (St. Louis) would use his career-best 73 to vault to the top of the Senior Net Leaderboard with a 2-day total of even par, besting Stu Kambury by one-stroke and Greg Hawkins and Linda Wallace by 2 strokes. Open Net was won by James Medina (Houston), with a 2-day total of 3-over par, besting Scott Gennusa (+7) and Richard Michalsky (+8).
Each of the champions from the 2024 Lone-Star Shootout earn Priority Exemptions into this years North American Championship and Senior North American Championships, to be contested in Myrtle Beach, SC this September.
