2023 Summer Shootout at Sequoyah Results

[read_time]

This weekend, the APT hosted the Summer Stableford Shootout at Sequoyah National Golf Club, in the mountains of western North Carolina.  148 players from around the country showed up for the sold-out event, hosted at one of the most unique and challenging golf courses the country has to offer.  Playing at elevation, players were faced with the unique challenges of managing the slopes of a mountain course, in a fun stableford format that rewards players who successfully navigate the risk-reward holes.  With several driveable par 4’s and reachable par 5’s, taking those risks were at a premium as birdies and eagles were rewarded in the modified stableford system.

In Division 1, Daniel Jackson (Charlotte) had back-to-back solid rounds of 38 points to earn a one shot victory with 76 points over Derek Nicholson (Birmingham) and Tim Barto (Charlotte), who finished in 2nd place just 1 point behind with 75 points.  Rick Milligan (Upstate SC) finished in 4th place with a total of 73 points.  On the senior side, Barney Sutley (Indianapolis) bested Jacob Sigmon (Upstate SC) with a 2-day total of 65 points for the win, besting Sigmon by 3 points.

In Division 2, Paul Hess (New Jersey/Philly) earned his 2nd win of the 2023 season with a phenomenal final round 71 to earn 77 points and a 6 point victory over J Combs (Carolina Triad), who finished in solo 2nd place.  Matt Fegley (Northern California) finished in 3rd place with a total of 68 points, while Mitchell Haig (Atlanta) and Travis Wartluft (Charlotte) finshed tied for 4th with 64 points.  Anthony Stout (East Tennessee) finished in 6th place with 63 points, while Jantzen McDonald (Atlanta), Bob Grove (Upstate SC) and Michael Lynn (Nashville) finished T-7 with 62 points to round out the money.  On the senior side, Paul Hess completed the double-dip earning the USGA Max payout of $1,000 for his efforts.  Travis Wartluft finished in 2nd place, Anthony Stout in 3rd, and Bob Grove rounded out the money in 4th place.

In Division 3, Jesse Vanvleet (Kentucky) made a strong second day showing with 35 points to overtake the leaders and earn the victory with 63 points.  Denver Hubert (Augusta) finished in 2nd place with 59 points, while Jonathan Pinkney (Kentucky) finished in 3rd place with 57 points.  Carolina Triad’s Trinity Manning finished in 4th place with a total of 53 points, while Mitch Altman (Charlotte) and Chad Davis (Virginia Capital) finished tied for 5th with 52 points.  Russell McDonald (Charlotte) and Kevin Webster (Indianapolis) finished tied for 7th to round out the money with 50 points each.  On the senior side, Mitch Altman earned the win with 52 points, followed by Russell McDonald with 50 points, Ann Watkins (Carolina Triad) with 49 points, and Gary Martin rounded out the money in 4th place with 48 points.

In Division 4, Gary Nivens (Charlotte) earned a 7-point victory with a solid final round of 27 points to finish with a 2-day total of 52 points.  Jason Crook (Charlotte) finished in solo 2nd with 45 points, while David Sides (Birmingham) finished in 3rd place with a total of 42 points.  Jon Kemper (Indianapolis) and Justin Sartain (Upstate SC) rounded out the top 5 with 2-day totals of 41 points each.  On the senior side, Gary Nivens completed the double-dip, winning with a score of 52 points.  Christy McCauley (Carolina Triad) finished in 2nd place with 38 points, while Scott Bryant (Upstate SC) finished in 3rd place with a 2-day total of 37 points.

In Division 5, Steve Smith (Cincinnati) and Jan Kendrick (Upstate SC) would need more than 36-holes to decide the event as both were tied with 26 points at the end of regulation.  The first hole is a tricky par-5 with a difficult tee shot and approach.  Steve Smith came out on top, making an incredible par to secure the victory!  Robbie Carlton (Tennessee East) came in 3rd place with a total of 24 points, while Danny Sullivan (Upstate SC) rounded out the money with a total of 21 points.  On the senior side, Steve Smith completed the double-dip with a total of 26 points, and Danny Sullivan finished in 2nd place with a total of 21 points.
