2023 Mozingo Lake Golf Tournament Results

[read_time]

While the weather looked grim leading up to the event, we ended up with the most mild weekend you could possibly ask for at the wonderful Mozingo Lake Golf Course.  Low 70’s, very light breezes, and fantastic course conditions made for some great scoring conditions if you could put the ball on the right side of the hole as the greens were super slick this weekend.

Jacob Bruhn went wire to wire in division 1 and never looked like he was going to give a shot back to the field.  Back to back 1 over par rounds of 73 made it hard to catch him.  Dave Kearney and Kory Glasgow stayed in striking distance, but were going to need some help from Bruhn if they were going to affect the outcome.  But Jacob was having none of it, and kept the pedal down sealing the victory by 5 shots over Kory Glasgow.  Dave Kearney is coming back to form after a long layoff, and with Bruhn winning with some solid golf and Glasgow close behind, D1 is sure to bring some fire this season.

Another Jacob had a wire to wire win this weekend as well.  In division 2, chapter owner Jake Englebrake played a scrappy round day 1, with his putter and short game saving his round from an errant driver all day.  He shot a 3 over 75 on day 1, thanks to one eagle and one birdie, while Brian Taylor was only one shot back.  Day 2 started similarly to day 1, but by the 4th hole of the round, Taylor was up by 2 strokes over Jake after an early bogie and double bogey by Jake.  Englebrake got back on the horse, and with a front 9 littered with birdies, he fired off a 1 under 35 on the front.  A double bogey on 10 brought Taylor back to striking distance, but a near hole out on the difficult 11th par 3 for Jake that led to a birdie gave a little more breathing room.  A stumble on the par 5 12th hole by Taylor gave another stroke to Jake, and he did the same thing on 13.  An eagle by Jake on the par 5 14th hole sealed the deal, and with the help of 5 birdies and one eagle, his round of 1 over par gave him the win over Brian Taylor in second and Nick Jianas in a close 3rd after a great second round.

Division 3 had a standout performance by John Lusker on Sunday!!  John, who’s been playing with the APT for 3 years now, has been working hard on his game and steadily improving, and today it all came together.  He was one back after a solid 77 on day one, behind Verl Seger who was lights out with a 76.  Day 2 belonged to Lusker though.  With the help over 6 birdies, he fired off the round of the tournament – a 1 under par 71!  John closed the door on all chasers with that round, and Verl fell to second place, with Todd Gurss in third.

Division 4 was led by Darren Fichtner after day 1, and Kyle Bauer only a few strokes behind.  Day 2 was a different story for both of those players, as they couldn’t follow up the solid play of Saturday.  Kyle shot 2 strokes worse, while Darren stumbled and fell down to 5th place.  But while they stumbled, Brandon Hale fired a career best tournament round of 79, passing up everyone in D4.  James Fenton also improved by 5 strokes over day 1, but Brandon’s fantastic round of 79 was too much to match, and Brandon is back in the winners circle!

Division 5 was a tight race both days.  Alan Parker, Cliff Austin Sr, and Jayme Duinink were all tied after day 1 with a comfortable lead over the rest of the field.  Day 2 was more of the same, with the three players all playing together, going back and forth all day.  Only 2 strokes separated the three players in the end, with Jayme finishing in 3rd place, and Cliff Austin Sr finishing in 2nd place, meaning Alan once again found the winners circle in D5!

Verl Seger was leading the senior net game by 1 stroke over Todd Gurss, but Todd pulled it back on Sunday and fired off another solid round.  He passed Seger by 3 strokes on day 2, and finished first in senior net and third in division 3.
